Scots handle Champion Christian 59-34

Dodson and Kelley led Lyon to ninth win

Marleigh Dodson scored 16 points and Paige Kelley added 14 points to lead the Lyon College Scots to a 59-34 win over visiting Champion Christian College of Hot Springs on Friday afternoon.
The Scots (9-4) got eight points from Mari-Hanna Newsom, six points from Kristen Baham and Katie Turner added five. Baham led the Scots in rebounding with seven and Dodson had six boards. Baham also had four assists and Newsom had three steals in the game. As team, the Scots out-rebounded Champion 48-28.
Jurnee Hicks came off the bench for Champion Christian to lead them with eight points on the day.
Newsome put the Scots on the scoreboard first with a three-pointer, Dodson came back with a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound, then Kelly put in a layup off an inbounds pass for a 7-0 lead. Dodson added another layup after an offensive rebound by Baham, then Dodson hit a jumper in the lane to make it 11-2 with 5:17 to go in the first quarter.
Without the services of Jade Giron for the game, the Scots used everyone on their bench in the game. After Champion had closed the game to four points, Paige Tate made a layup inside and Ashley Reichart added two free throws for a 15-7 advantage. Kaylie Davenport put in a basket with an assist going to Dodson for Lyon. Then Kelley sank two free throws, Turner hit a jumper, and made one of two from the line. Baham came up with a steal and passed to Dodson for a layup. Turner added two more free throws Dodson put in a layup with an assist going to Baham, then Kelley scored inside with 3:35 to go in the second quarter to give Lyon a 32-14 lead. Newsom added two free throws and a three-pointer before the end of the half to put the Scots up 37-14.
Dodson added a free throw in the third quarter, then hit a layup, passed to Kelley for a jumper and Kayla Richardson added two free throws for a 45-16 Lyon advantage. Richardson added two more free throws with 1:10 to go in the period to give the Scots a 47-23 lead.
Kelley and Dodson both scored for Lyon on inside layups, Baham made a three-pointer and Kelley put in the final points for Lyon with 3:59 to go to make it 59-32.
The Scots will be in action again on Jan. 6 at home against Missouri-Baptist in an American Conference league game.
