Lyon College defeats Philander Smith 54-51

Dodson scores 13 in road win

Box Score LITTLE ROCK – The Lyon College Women's basketball team defeated Philander Smith 54-51 in Little Rock on Saturday afternoon.
Allison Byars sank one of two free throws with 11 seconds left to put the Scots up by three points and Rakia Lane missed a three-pointer with three seconds to go to. Katie Turner hauled in the defensive board to seal the win.
Dodson led Lyon with 13 points, Turner added 10 points and Paige Kelley scored eight in the victory. Dodson and Kelley led the Scots with nine rebounds each in the game.
Rakia Lane led Philander Smith with 20 points.
Lyon College led 16-5 after the first quarter. Kelley started off the scoring with a layup, they Byars made a three-pointer with an assist from Mari-Hanna Newsome. Dodson hit a jumper and Newsome made a three-pointer, then Kristen Baham connected on a trey for the Scots. Dodson made a free throw and Jade Giron hit two free throws with four seconds left in the first quarter to put Lyon up by 11 points.
Philander Smith went on a 7-0 run to cut Lyon's lead to 17-12 in the first three minutes of the second period. Dodson stopped the run with two free throws and Turner hit a three-pointer for the Scots after Philander Smith closed to within one point. A few seconds later, Haley Wesley made a three-pointer off a pass from Newsome and Dodson added two free throws for a 25-17 lead with 3:27 to go before halftime.
Philander Smith outscored Lyon 8-1 over the next few minutes to cut lead down to three points, but Giron made two free throws for the Scots and Turner added two more at the line for a 30-24 Lyon lead at halftime.
Kelley hit a jumper and Turner made a layup for the Scots to push the lead to 10 points early in the third quarter. Newsome hit a three-pointer, but Philander Smith eventually closed the lead to three points, 39-36. Philander Smith got one throw in the final 2:32 of the quarter to make it a two-point Scots lead.
Lyon kept the lead in the early stages of the fourth quarter on baskets from Kelley and Wesley. Following a three-pointer, Dasia Turner made a short bank shot for Philander Smith for a one-point advantage, 44-43 with 5:52 left.
Kelley got the lead back for the Scots on a layup, the Turner added a jump shot and Dodson followed that with two field goals and pushed Lyon to a 51-44 lead with 2:10 to go. After two free throws from Dodson, Philander Smith got as close as two points, 53-51 with 24 seconds remaining in the game.
The Scots improve to 7-4 overall.
