No. 21 Scots Sweep Series against Trojans

Lyon College won the final two games of its series against Hannibal-LaGrange by scores of 12-6 and 9-1

BATESVILLE, Ark. The 21st-ranked Lyon College baseball team improved to 6-0 in American Midwest Conference play as the Scots swept their second-straight conference series of the season. The Scots won the final two games of its series against Hannibal-LaGrange by scores of 12-6 and 9-1.

The Scots improved to 15-4 (6-0 AMC), while HLGU fell to 6-9 (0-3 AMC).

Game One: #21 Lyon 12, HLGU 6

In a game that was suspended due to darkness from Friday night, the Scots' bats came to life with three runs in the bottom of the eighth when play resumed on Saturday afternoon in a 12-6 win for Lyon.

The Trojans struck first with a run in the top of the second before the Scots answered back with a pair of two-run innings over the third and fourth frames. In the bottom of the third, Kylan Barnett, Alan West and Troy Strack all reached base with a walk before Joe Weatherford knocked a two-run single to right. Chris Lara got hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fourth before he moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Clack. Jake Michener plated Lara in the next at-bat with a single to left before an error allowed Michener to come around to score later in the frame.

HLGU tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth before the Scots plated four runs in the bottom half of the frame to extend their lead to 8-3.

The Trojans cut the deficit to three in the top of the seventh following an RBI-double by Jared Remspecher and an RBI-single by Matthew Lawson before the Scots answered back with a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by West.

HLGU plated a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI-groundout by Edwin Betancourt before play was suspended due to darkness.

The Scots put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth after play resumed on Saturday. Weatherford opened up the frame with a lead-off single before Tristan Buschow got hit by a pitch to put two runners on. A passed ball allowed the pair to move up an extra 90-feet as Reese Chovanec plated Weatherford with a sacrifice fly to left. Clack followed with a bloop-single to give the Scots a 12-6 lead.

Jordan Olivera came in to close the door in the top of the ninth as he struck out the final batter of the game.

Ryan Porras earned the win for the Scots as he allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out nine over five innings of work.

Michener led the Scots offensively with three hits in the game, while Weatherford and Clack collected two hits each.

Game Two: #21 Lyon 9, HLGU 1

It was all Lyon in the series finale as the Scots took a comfortable lead with a five-run third inning and cruised to a 9-1 victory to complete the series sweep.

Lyon struck first in the bottom of the first inning as Michener reached base thanks to an error by the HLGU defense. Michener came around to score later in the frame on an RBI-single by West.

After the Trojans evened the score in the top of the third, the Scots put up a crooked number in the bottom half of the frame. Dustin Caplett got hit by a pitch to start the rally before Michener reached base on a bunt single. Barnett scored the pair with a double into the gap in right-center field before he scored on a single by West. Later in the inning, Strack plated West with a safety squeeze before Buschow gave the Scots a 6-1 lead with an RBI-single to center.

The Scots put the game away with a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the seventh to earn the series sweep.

West earned the win on the mound as he allowed one run on five hits while striking out seven over six innings of work.

Michener, West and Aaron Hurd all collected two hits each in the win for the Scots.

The Scots will continue American Midwest Conference play with a three-game series at Columbia College next Saturday and Sunday. The Scots and Cougars will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon before concluding the series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday at noon.
