COLUMBIA, Mo. – The 21st-ranked Lyon College baseball team and Columbia College spilt their series-opening doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. CC won the first game, 11-4, before the Scots evened the series with a 15-8 victory in the nightcap. The two teams will play the rubber game to determine a series winner tomorrow at noon.
The Scots moved to 16-5 (7-1 American Midwest Conference), while CC now stands at 15-4 (4-1 AMC).
Game One: CC 11, #21 Lyon 4
The Scots took an early lead in the series opener with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning against the Cougars. After a lead-off walk by Jake Michener, Kylan Barnett got hit by a pitch to put the two runners on for the Scots. Alan West followed with an RBI-single to left to plate the first run before Tristan Buschow worked a bases-loaded walk later in the inning.
Columbia College pulled away from the Scots with seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning to take a 7-2 lead.
The Scots attempted to rally back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, but the Cougars scored four-unanswered runs between the fifth and six innings and took game one, 11-4.
West finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBI for the Scots.
Game Two: #21 Lyon 15, CC 8
Columbia College scored a run in both the first and third innings and took an early 2-0 lead over the Scots in the nightcap.
The offense came alive for the Scots during the middle innings as Lyon scored 11 combined runs between the fourth through sixth innings. Barnett started the top of the fourth off with a lead-off double before he came around to score on an error by the Cougars. Buschow walked later in the inning before Chris Lara plated a pair of runs with a two-run single to left.
CC responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, before the Scots answered back with another three-run inning in the top of the fifth. A walk by Michener and a single by Barnett put two runners on before West doubled to right field to plate Michener. The Scots successfully pulled off a double-steal later in the inning as Barnett scored from third to pull Lyon within one at 6-5. Buschow knotted the score at 6-6 later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Cougars regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Brad Prebay before the Scots broke the game open with five runs in the top of the sixth.
CC pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Scots put the game away with four more runs in the top of the eighth to even up the series.
Ryan Clack and Barnett both finished 3-for-4 at the plate, while Troy Strack, Michener and Lara collected two hits each.
