BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 21st-ranked Lyon College baseball team scored early and often as the Scots scored 17 runs on 13 hits in a 17-4 series-opening win against Hannibal-LaGrange on Friday afternoon. The Scots and Trojans were scheduled to play a doubleheader on Friday, but the nightcap was suspended in the bottom of the eighth with the Scots leading 9-6. The game will be resumed at noon on Saturday, with the series finale set to follow shortly after. A complete recap of the final two games of the series will be published on Saturday.
Lyon improved to 13-4 (4-0 American Midwest Conference), while Hannibal-LaGrange fell to 6-7 (0-1 AMC).
The Scots scored one run in each of the first three innings in the series opener against the Trojans. Jake Michener blasted a solo home run to left in the bottom of the first before Dustin Caplett added an RBI-single in the bottom of the second. Troy Strack gave the Scots a 3-0 lead with an RBI-single in the bottom of the third.
Hannibal-LaGrange rallied back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning before the Scots plated 14 runs over the final two innings. Lyon scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth before putting the game out of reach with nine runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth after HLGU scored a run in the top half of the frame.
Aaron Hurd, Cameron Hockle, Michener, Strack and Caplett all collected two hits in the win for the Scots. Michener and Hockle drove in four runs each, while Hurd plated three runs in the win.
Brock Beacham earned the win on the mound as he improved to 4-0 on the season. Beacham allowed one run on two hits while striking out two over 1.2 innings of relief. Michael Jorgensen finished the game with a scoreless inning of relief.
