No. 21 Scots Split Doubleheader at BMC

Lyon split its first two road games of the season at Blue Mountain College

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. The 21st-ranked Lyon College baseball team split its first two road games of the season today at Blue Mountain College. BMC took game one of the twin bill, 6-5, before the Scots earned a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

Lyon moved to 12-4 on the year, while BMC stands at 8-10.

Game One: BMC 6, #21 Lyon 5 (7 Innings)

The Scots and Toppers answered run-for-run in the first two innings of the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader. Both teams scored a single run in the first inning and two more each in the second frame.

BMC took the lead over the Scots with a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Deonteau Rieves before added two more runs in the fifth.

The Scots attempted a late rally in the top of the sixth as Chris Lara got hit by a pitch to start the frame before he came around to score on an RBI-double by Dustin Caplett. With two outs in the inning, the Scots had runners on the corners as an error allowed Caplett to score and cut the deficit to one.

BMC was able to hold on for as the Toppers shut the Scots down in order in the seventh.

Caplett led the Scots offensively as he finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

Game Two: #21 Lyon 4, BMC 3 (7 Innings)

The Scots struck first in the nightcap in the top of the second inning as Joe Weatherford led off the frame with a walk before he moved into scoring position following a single by Tristan Buschow. After a sacrifice bunt by Caplett put two runners in scoring position, Robby Broseus scored Weatheford with a sacrifice fly.

Lyon added another run in the top of the third as Barnett hit a lead-off triple before Alan West plated him with a sacrifice fly to center.

The Scots extended its lead to 3-0 with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single by Jake Michener before BMC knotted the score at 3-3 with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Weatherford led off the sixth with a walk before he wound up on third following a BMC error and a groundout. A passed ball allowed Weatherford to score as Brock Beacham shut down the Toppers in the final two innings to seal the win.

Barnett led the Scots offensively in the nightcap as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.

The Scots will resume American Midwest Conference play this weekend when they host Hannibal-LaGrange for a three-game series. Lyon and HLG will play a doubleheader on Friday before finishing out the series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday. Both days are scheduled to begin at noon.
