No. 21 Scots Open Conference Play with Win against Hornets

Lyon earned an 8-1 win over Harris-Stowe in its first American Midwest Conference game of the season

BATESVILLE, Ark. The 21st-ranked Lyon College baseball team opened up American Midwest Conference play with an 8-1 win over Harris-Stowe behind five scoreless innings pitched by Lex Meinderts on Friday afternoon at Fred Wann Field. Meinderts struck out eight batters and scattered two hits as he improved to 3-0 on the year.

As a team, the Scots improved to 9-3 (1-0 AMC), while HSSU fell to 9-10 (0-1 AMC).

The Scots gave Meinderts an early 2-0 lead after the first two innings of the ball game. Kylan Barnett plated Jake Michener in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly before Tristan Buschow scored Cameron Hockle with an RBI-groundout in the bottom of the second.

The Scots broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth as Barnett opened up the frame with a lead-off double that hit off the wall in right. Alan West followed with a double that fell just inside the line in right to put two runners in scoring position for the Scots. Aaron Hurd came up next for the Scots and plated Barnett with a sacrifice fly to left before Hockle added another run with an RBI-double in the gap in right center. Troy Strack gave the Scots a 5-0 advantage with an RBI-single through the hole at short.

HSSU scored its lone run in the top of the seventh before the Scots scored three unanswered runs between the seventh and eighth innings to take game one, 8-1.

West finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Scots offensively, while Barnett and Strack added two hits each.

The Scots and Hornets will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
