BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men's wrestling team fell to Williams Baptist University Tuesday evening in an AMC Dual, 37-9.
Tuesday also marked 'Senior Day' for four Scots' seniors in
Arman Mansouri, Roger Gasman,
Bruce Whitehead, and
John Bentley. Prior to the match, these four seniors were honored for their contributions to the men's wrestling program.
In the 157 pound weight class,
Roger Gasmann and Rhett Womack from Williams Baptist University faced off in a high-scoring affair. Womack jumped out to an early lead, but Gasmann chipped away at it, cutting the deficit to just two in the last period. Gasmann, though, ran out of time and was edged by Womack, 14-12.
In the 165 pound weight class,
Derrick Top squared off with Joel Anguino from Williams Baptist University. Anguino led for the majority of the match. In the last period, however, Top started his comeback. With just under a minute left in the match, Top pinned Anguino, earning the Scots six team points.
The closest match of the evening was in the 165 pound weight class as
Arman Mansouri faced Josh Tyler of Williams Baptist University. Mansouri led the majority of the match. However, Tyler would make a comeback and go up by one with just under thirty seconds remaining. Mansouri, though, stayed composed and earned a crucial two points on a reversal, earning Mansouri an 8-7 victory over Tyler.
Jacob Lawrinenko,
Carlos Cuevas,
Bruce Whitehead,
John Bentley, and
Noah Wilson all competed hard, but ultimately fell in their respective matches. Williams Baptist University went on to defeat the Scots by a score of 37-9 on Senior Day.
Coach's Corner: "First and foremost I want to say Thank You to my Four Seniors –
Roger Gasmann,
Arman Mansouri,
Bruce Whitehead and
John Bentley. They each have been here four years and will receive their degrees in the spring, now that's exciting! The dual on the other hand was a tale of two cities. The first half we wrestled solid fundamental wrestling, the second half we tried to hold onto some leads and it ended up costing us. I would say that part falls on me and will be adjusted starting tomorrow.
We have two weeks to tweak up some things and get ready for the AMC Tournament. If we can wrestle solid 7-minute matches, it has the potential to be a really fun tournament. Either way, I am so proud of these kids as they have worked their butts off both in the classroom and on the mat." - Coach
