BATESVILLE, Ark. Jake Michener and Kylan Barnett combined for six of the Scots nine hits as the 21st-ranked Lyon College baseball team earned an 8-6 win over Texas A&M-Texarkana at Fred Wann Field on Tuesday afternoon. Michener finished 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored, while Barnett also finished 3-for-4 but drove in four runs.

The Scots improved to 7-0 and are off to the best start to a season since 2007, when the team won its first 18 games. TAMUT dropped to 6-3 with the loss.

An error by the Scots led to a first-inning run for the Eagles, but Lyon quickly tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. Michener started the frame with a lead-off double before he came around to score on an RBI-single by Barnett.

Lyon began to pull away from TAMUT with four runs in the bottom of the second and another run in the bottom of the third on a Tristan Buschow sacrifice fly, but the Eagles cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

The Scots got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning as Michener roped another double in the gap before he came around to score on another RBI-single by Barnett.

TAMUT attempted one final comeback in the late innings as Kealon Martin plated two runs with a pinch-hit double to pull the Eagles back within two at 7-5.

Lyon added a key insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on another RBI-base hit by Barnett to plate Michener as the Scots took a three-run lead into the final frame.

TAMUT plated a run in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch, but that would be as close as the Eagles would get as Andrew Pitts struck out the final two batters he faced to earn his first save.

Lex Meinderts improved to 1-0 on the mound after tossing three scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts.

The Scots will now prepare for a big four-game series this upcoming weekend at home. Lyon will host No. 12 LSU-Shreveport for a pair of doubleheaders this Friday and Saturday. Both doubleheaders are set to begin at noon each day.
