BATESVILLE, Ark. – The No. 21 Lyon College baseball team opened up the 2020 season today with a pair of games against No. 13 Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The Scots defeated the Eagles by a score of 19-10 in game one and leads in the second game 11-0, before suspending the remainder of the game until tomorrow.
Game One: No. 21 Lyon 19, No. 13 OKWU 10
After each team scratched across a run in the first inning, it was the Scots who strung together a big inning in the bottom of the third.
Kylan Barnett and
Alan West started the inning off earning a pair of walks.
Jake Michener, then, singled to left, loading the bases.
Cameron Hockle earned a bases loaded walk, giving Lyon a 2-1 lead. After a hit-by-pitch and walk allowed two more Scots to score,
Chris Lara hit a sac fly to right, scoring Hockle from third.
Robby Broseus, then, slapped a one-out single to right, scoring
Andrew Schnitzius from third. A pair of RBI singles by
Troy Strack and
Alan West extended Lyon's advantage to seven.
Jake Michener, then, delivered a two-RBI single, putting the Scots up by a score of 10-1. With two outs in the frame,
Cameron Hockle stepped to the plate and crushed a 3-run home run over the left field fence to cap off a 12-run third inning.
Oklahoma Wesleyan, though, would respond with a big inning of their own in the top of the fourth. Isaac Wersland and Cody Muncy each hit a home run in the nine-run fourth inning, trimming Lyon's lead to just three.
Lyon added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. An RBI groundout by
Andrew Schnitzius and a sac fly by
Chris Lara put the Scots up 15-10.
In the bottom of the sixth inning,
Kylan Barnett delivered a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Scots a 17-10 lead. Lyon would tack on two more runs in the frame as
Alan West and
Jake Michener would come around to score, extending Lyon's lead to nine.
Andrew Pitts retired the Eagles in order, earning Lyon a 19-10 victory over OKWU in the first game of the year.
Troy Strack,
Jake Michener, and
Cameron Hockle all collected two hits apiece in game one. Hockle totaled a game-high five RBI's. The Eagles had a pair of players finish with two hits each in the contest.
Brock Beacham earned his first win of the season as he pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Beacham surrendered just two walks while striking out two. Cole Allen was tagged with the loss as he allowed five runs in two innings pitched.
Game Two: No. 21 Lyon 11, No. 13 OKWU 0 (Susp. Bottom 6th)
Lyon wasted no time in this one as the Scots scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Scots loaded the bases with two outs in the frame.
Joe Weatherford laced a 2-RBI double to left field, scoring
Troy Strack and
Alan West. Two more Scots came around to score on an errant throw by the OKWU pitcher – Crosby Bringhurt. Lyon would cap off the inning as
Dalton Ernest crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Bringhurt, giving Lyon a 5-0 advantage after one inning of play.
The score would remain 5-0 in favor of the Scots until the bottom of the fourth. A walk and hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second with two outs in the frame.
Jake Michener delivered an RBI-single into center field, scoring
Kylan Barnett. After a walk of
Cameron Hockle,
Joe Weatherford drilled a 2-RBI single into center field, putting the Scots up 8-0.
Tristan Buschow, then, delivered an RBI-single into center field, scoring
Cameron Hockle and giving Lyon a 9-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Scots would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a 2-RBI double by
Kylan Barnett, extending Lyon's lead to 11.
The game was suspended in the bottom of the sixth inning and will resume tomorrow beginning at 2 p.m. with game three to follow.
