JOPLIN, Mo. – The fourth-seeded Lyon College baseball team had its American Midwest Conference Tournament run come to an end as the Scots fell to the third-seeded Missouri Baptist Spartans, 9-2, in an elimination game on Friday afternoon at Joe Becker Stadium.
The Scots fell to 38-20 with the loss and will wait and see if they receive an at-large bid for the 11th annual NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round, when the national office releases the Opening Round qualifiers and bracket on Thursday, May 9, at 4 p.m. (CDT) on the
NAIA Facebook page.
Both teams traded a run each in the opening inning of Friday's contest. Lyon got its run in the top of the frame on an RBI-single by
Troy Strack, while MBU answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI-single by DeShawn Lookout to knot the score at 1-1.
Lyon regained the lead with a run in the top of the third inning.
Kylan Barnett started the Scots off with a lead-off double before
Alan West singled him home in the next at-bat to give Lyon a 2-1 advantage.
MBU responded with eight unanswered runs over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and advanced in the AMC Tournament with a 9-2 victory over the Scots.
Six Scots all recorded one hit each in the game for Lyon.
Ryan Porras suffered the loss on the mound for the Scots as he allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out two over four innings pitched.
Brock Beacham added a pair of scoreless innings of relief late in the game for Lyon.
