WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The third-seeded Lyon College baseball team found itself in an early hold as No. 5-seed Baker (Kan.) jumped out to an early 10-lead over the Scots after four innings in the books. Despite the early deficit, the Scots worked their way back into the game and outscored the Wildcats, 18-2, over the final five frames as Lyon earned an 18-12 comeback victory over Baker to advance to the next round in the NAIA Baseball Opening Round Williamsburg Bracket.
The Scots improved to 39-21 on the season and will play Mobile in another elimination game later tonight at 6 p.m. (CDT). Baker ended its season at 26-27.
The comeback started for the Scots in the top of the fifth inning. The Scots had runners on second and third with only one out after an error by Baker and a double by
Tanner Seibel. A second error in the inning by the Wildcats allowed two runners to score for Lyon as
Ryan Clack reached base on the play.
Jake Michener followed with an RBI-single in shallow right-center field to plate Clack.
Kylan Barnett drew a walk in the next at-bat before Michener came around to score on the third error of the inning by Baker and cut the deficit to 10-4.
The Scots chipped away once again in the top of the sixth with the help of a two-out rally. Seibel collected another base hit before he came around to score later in the inning as
Ryan Clack beat out an infield single and wound up on third following an errant throw by the Baker defense. A pair of walks followed the BU error to load the bases for
Alan West. West shot a ball down the right-field line that allowed two more Scots to score and cut the Baker lead to 10-7.
Baker tried to regain the momentum in the game as the Wildcats scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth but the Scots continued to roll offensively. In the top of the seventh, the Scots had runners on the corners with two away as
Cameron Hockle was called upon to pinch hit. Hockle delivered a big blast off the bench for the Scots as he hit a three-run home run over the wall in left-center field. The Scots pulled back within a single run later in the inning on an RBI-single by Barnett.
Seibel tied the game at 12-12 with an RBI-single in the top of the eighth before the Scots broke the game open with six runs on seven hits in the top of the ninth inning.
Michael Jorgensen earned his first collegiate win as he tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Jorgensen allowed just two hits while striking out four.
Seibel had a big day at the plate as he finished 4-for-6 at the dish with two RBI and two runs scored. Michener, Pritchard, Clack and
Alan West all added two hits each.
