O'FALLON, Mo. – Playing in its final road games of the 2019 regular season, the 15th-ranked Lyon College baseball team came up short in both games of a doubleheader at Harris-Stowe on Saturday. HSSU won game one, 6-2, and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Scots in the nightcap.
Lyon dropped to 35-16 (18-9 American Midwest Conference), while HSSU improved to 20-24 (13-13 AMC).
Game One: HSSU 6, #15 Lyon 2
Lyon took an early lead against the Hornets in the first game on Saturday in the top of the first inning.
Jake Michener got hit by a pitch to open up the game before
Kylan Barnett moved him into scoring position on a ground out. After a walk by
Alan West,
Troy Strack doubled home Michener to give the Scots a 1-0 lead.
Harris-Stowe answered back with three runs in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second before the Scots broke into the scoring column again in the top of the sixth. The Scots worked the bases loaded with a two-out rally in the frame.
Tanner Seibel started the rally with a double to left field before
Brandon Giribaldie walked and Michener got hit by another pitch. Barnett drove in Seibel in the next at-bat with a single to cut the deficit to 5-2.
HSSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI-single by Deshawn Cole as the Hornets earned a 6-2 victory.
Mack Larson suffered the loss on the mound for the Scots.
Brock Beacham kept the Scots in the game as he allowed just one run over 4.1 innings of relief.
Seibel led the Scots offensively as he went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Senior,
Kyle West, moved into second place on the all-time career hits list for the Lyon College baseball team during the game. West collected his 232nd career hit with his double in the seventh inning and passed former Scot, Sam Cooke, who collected 231 hits during his career from 2003-06.
Game Two: HSSU 4, #15 Lyon 3
The Hornets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Scots after the first inning before Lyon began to chip away.
Alan West provided the Scots with a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly and trimmed the deficit to 3-1. In the top of the sixth, the Scots put the first two runners on after a walk and an error by the Hornets. HSSU got the next batter to pop out, Lyon loaded the bases after Seibel got hit by a pitch.
Cameron Hockle drove in a run for the Scots with an RBI fielder's choice that pulled the Scots within one at 3-2.
HSSU responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead back to two at 4-2 before the Scots attempted another comeback in the top of the eighth.
Tristan Buschow opened up the frame with a lead-off triple and came around to score on an RBI-single by
Zane Pritchard. The Scots worked the tying run into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Seibel, but the Hornets got the next two batters out held the lead the rest of the way.
Alan West and
Tristan Buschow finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Scots offensively.
Ryan Porras suffered the loss as he allowed four runs on nine hits while striking out 10 over eight innings pitched.
The Scots will return to Batesville and open up a four-game home stand to end the regular season on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. against College of the Ozarks.
