HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Lyon College softball team split the season series with Freed-Hardeman University on Tuesday afternoon.
Lyon moves to 26-9 on the season, 13-5 in the AMC. Freed-Hardeman University goes to 18-7 on the year, 10-4 in the AMC.
Game One: Lyon 6, Freed-Hardeman 5
Freed-Hardeman opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning as Caitlin Mitchell delivered a one-out grand slam over the left field fence. This gave the Lions a 4-0 lead heading into the third inning.
The Scots responded with a couple runs of their own in the third. After a Faith Cornmesser single put runners on the corners, Addison Harmon stepped up to the plate with two outs in the frame. Harmon slapped an RBI single into right field, plating Cheyenne Herrera from third base. Next, Cheyenne Black followed suit with an RBI single, scoring Cornmesser and cutting the deficit in half.
In the top of the fifth inning, Megan Micke got the rally started with a one-out single. Then, Cornmesser hit a single into center field, putting runners on first and second. Following a fielder's choice, Cheyenne Black roped a 2-RBI double to the right-center field gap, knotting the game at four.
In the top of the sixth, the Scots put runners on second and third with two outs on a walk by Siobhan Taylor and a single by Mikayla Mullen. Megan Micke hit a hard ground ball to the FHU third baseman who made an errant throw, allowing Taylor and Mullen to score. This gave Lyon a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.
The score would remain 6-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. The Lions put runners on second and third with one out in the frame. Katelynn Platt and the Lyon defense was up to the challenge as Platt would induce a sac fly and ground out, giving the Scots a 6-5 victory over Freed-Hardeman.
Katelyn Platt pitched all seven innings in this matchup as she gave up four earned runs, while striking out one batter. Offensively, Cheyenne Black, Addison Harmon, and Faith Cornmesser led the charge for the Scots as the trio accounted for six hits, three runs, and four RBI's in the contest.
Game Two: Freed-Hardeman 6, Lyon 5
The two sides exchanged runs in the first inning as Addison Harmon ripped an RBI single to plate Megan Micke and give the Scots a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Cassie Hayes led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI groundout to tie the game at one.
In the bottom of the second, Lily Bombard reached on an error to begin the inning. Bombard would later score on a sac fly by Kristen Hunsicker, giving the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
The Scots would retake the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Lyon put runners on second and third with one out and Mikayla Mullen at the dish. Mullen drilled a single into left field, scoring Riley Shaw and knotting the game at two. With two outs in the frame, Megan Micke ripped a 2-RBI double to right field, scoring Siobhan Taylor and Mikayla Mullen.
Freed-Hardeman got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Sophie Dunavant hit a solo home run over the center field wall. This cut Lyon's lead to just one after four innings of play.
The Lions would retake the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-RBI double by Lily Bombard, giving FHU a 5-4 advantage.
The visitors from Batesville responded right back in the top of the sixth. After Cheyenne Herrera was hit by the pitch to open the inning, Mikayla Mullen laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Herrera to second. Herrera would come around to score on Kendra Kelley's RBI single to left-center field, tying the game at five.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh inning when Kaylyn Graham hit a walk-off home run to give the Lions a 6-5 victory over the Scots.
Shyanne Pedroza started the game in the circle and threw four innings, while allowing three runs and striking out two batters. Katelyn Platt entered in the fifth inning and threw the remaining 2.1 innings, while allowing three runs. Offensively, Megan Micke and Addison Harmon paced the Scots. Micke had two hits, totaled two RBI's, one run scored, swiped a bag, and drew a walk in the contest. Harmon delivered two hits, drove in one Scot, and stole two bags in the night cap.
UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots go on the road as they take on No. 24 Central Baptist College on Saturday for a conference doubleheader with the first game starting at 12:00 p.m.
