O'FALLON, Mo. – The 15th-ranked Lyon College baseball team and Harris-Stowe had an exciting start to their series on Friday afternoon at CarShield Field. HSSU held a lead over the Scots for much of the game until Lyon responded with seven-straight runs over the final three frames and took a 9-5 advantage over the Hornets into the bottom of the ninth. Harris-Stowe pulled within one and had the tying run in scoring position, but the Scots held on for a 9-8 victory over the Hornets in the series opener.
Lyon improved to 35-14 (18-7 American Midwest Conference), while HSSU slipped to 18-24 (11-13 AMC).
Lyon quickly got on the board in the top of the first inning.
Jake Michener opened up the game with a lead-off double before he came around to score on a
Kylan Barnett RBI-single in the next at-bat.
HSSU answered back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame and one more in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead over the Scots before the two teams exchanged a run each in the middle innings.
The Scots stormed back in the late innings and opened up a stretch of seven-straight runs with five in the top of the seventh.
Zane Pritchard opened up the rally with a one-out single before
Tanner Seibel belted a two-run home run that cleared the wall in right field. Michener reached base later in the inning on a fielder's choice before Barnett drove him in again – this time, with an RBI-double.
Alan West followed the Barnett double with an RBI-double of his own to give the Scots a 5-4 advantage. After a
Troy Strack got hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second,
Kyle West singled home his brother to extend the Scots' lead to 6-4.
Lyon added to its total with a solo home run by
Cameron Hockle in the top of the eighth and a sacrifice fly by
Tristan Buschow in the top of the ninth.
Harris-Stowe made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth. The Hornets pulled back within one with three runs in the frame and had the tying run in scoring position, but the Scots got HSSU to ground into a fielder's choice to end the game.
Reese Chovanec earned the win on the mound for the Scots. Chovanec allowed one run on three hits while striking out six over five innings of relief.
Pritchard collected three hits in the game, while Michener, Barnett and
Alan West all finished with two hits each.
The Scots and Hornets will conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
