Blue Mountain College took a 3-0 lead over the Scots into the late innings in game one of Tuesday's doubleheader as the Toppers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the second and added another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Lyon attempted a comeback in the final two innings of the game starting in the top of the sixth. After
Alan West drew a lead-off walk to start the inning, BMC appeared as if they would get out of the inning without any damage as the Toppers got the next two batters out for the Scots.
Tristan Buschow kept the inning alive with a single to left field before
Cameron Hockle followed with a pinch-hit, RBI-single to plate West.
A walk and a BMC error opened up the door for another scoring opportunity for the Scots in the top of the seventh inning. With two runners aboard, West beat out an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout,
Kyle West drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left, but the Toppers would get the next batter to strike out as BMC held on for the win.
Brock Beacham suffered the loss on the mound as he allowed three runs on six hits while recording three strikeouts over six innings pitched.
Six Scots –
Jake Michener,
Kylan Barnett,
Tanner Seibel,
Alan West, Buschow and Hockle – all collected one hit each in the game.
Game Two: #15 Lyon 6, BMC 0
Much like they have done all season, the Scots bounced back in the nightcap of a doubleheader after dropping the first game of the day. Johnson held the Toppers in check all game as he allowed just three hits while striking out five over seven innings to earn a complete-game shutout.
A sacrifice fly by
Kyle West in the top of the first opened up the scoring for the Scots before Michener added a two-run home run in the top of the second as Lyon took an early, 3-0, lead.
Lyon added to its lead in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally.
Alan West started the rally with a single to left before
Troy Strack followed with an RBI-double. An error by the BMC defense allowed Strack to score later in the inning as Lyon extended its lead to 5-0 after five innings.
Andrew Schnitzius provided the Scots with another run in the top of the sixth with a lead-off solo home run as Johnson took care of things the rest of the way on the mound.
Barnett, Strack and Schnitzius led the Scots offensively as the trio finished with two hits each in the game.
The Lyon College baseball team will conclude its lengthy road trip this weekend when the Scots take on Harris-Stowe in a three-game AMC series. The series will open up on Friday with a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m. The Scots and Hornets will conclude their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 3 p.m. All three games against Harris-Stowe this weekend will be played at CarShield Field in O'Fallon, Mo.
