SAUGET, Ill. – The 18th-ranked Lyon College baseball team and Lindenwood-Belleville had to wait most of the day until the two teams squared off on the field due to inclement weather. The extended wait did not faze the Scots as their offense came up with two big innings. Lyon scored four runs between the first two innings and pulled away late with a six-run eighth inning as the Scots picked up a 10-3 win to clinch the series, 2-1 against the Lynx. Lyon improved to 27-11 (12-5 American Midwest Conference), while LUB slipped to 16-17 (10-8 AMC).
Jake Michener got hit by a pitch to start the game before he moved up to second on a stolen base. It did not take the Scots long to score first as Cameron Hockle singled to center to plate Michener and gave Lyon a 1-0 advantage.
LUB tied the game with a run in the bottom of the first before the Scots regained the lead in the top of the second inning. A lead-off double by Zane Pritchardstarted the big inning before Tanner Seibel singled home Darius Anderson who came on to run for Pritchard. Dalton Ernest followed with an RBI-triple before Michener extended the Scots' lead to 4-1 with an RBI-groundout.
Both offenses went quiet for the next several innings as a lone run by the Lynx in the bottom of the sixth accounted for the only run in the middle innings. The Scots responded in a big way, however, in the top of the eighth. Kyle West and Hockle both reached base to open up the frame before Tristan Buschowknocked an RBI-double to plate West. A wild pitch allowed Hockle to scamper home for the second run in the frame before Michener added a two-run double. The Scots added two more runs later in the frame on a two-run single off the bat of Troy Strack.
Lindenwood-Belleville added a run in the bottom of the ninth and threatened for more, but Morry Watson got the final LUB batter to pop out to Strack at short to end the game.
Michener, West and Buschow all collected two hits each in the game as Michener drove in three runs and scored twice.
Ryan Porras picked up the win on the mound as he tossed seven solid innings of two-run ball. Porras struck out 10 batters in the win.
The Scots will now turn their focus to a key midweek AMC game at No. 4 Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
