HENDERSON, Tenn. – The 17th-ranked Lyon College baseball team came up just short in a high-scoring affair at No. 6 Freed-Hardeman as the Lions earned a 10-8 win against the Scots in what was the series finale of a three-game set between the two teams on Tuesday night. Lyon dropped to 27-12 (12-6 American Midwest Conference), while FHU improved to 28-9 (16-2 AMC).
The scoring opened up right from the beginning as the Scots and Lions both broke the scoring column in the first inning. In the top of the first, Lyon scored twice on an RBI-single each by
Kyle West and
Zane Pritchard before the Lions cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom half of the frame.
Lyon added to its total in the top of the fourth after
Jake Michener brought home the first run of the frame with an RBI-double to center.
Troy Strack followed the Michener double with a walk before
Kylan Barnett cleared the bases with a three-run home run to right.
Once again, the Lions had an answer for the Scots in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded and two away, James Michael Dodd brought home a pair with a two-run single before Dominic Pisano added an RBI-single of his own in the next at-bat to trim the deficit to two at 6-4.
The middle innings proved to be the difference in the game as FHU scored six-unanswered runs between the fifth, sixth and seventh innings before the Scots attempted a comeback in the top of the eighth. Michener started the comeback with a one-out double before he came around to score on an RBI-single by Strack. Barnett followed with a single of his own to put runners on the corners before West drove in Strack with an RBI-single. FHU worked out of the jam with no further damage and held to Scots scoreless in the ninth to seal the win.
Michener and Barnett led the Scots offensively as both players collected three hits each. Strack, West and
Tristan Buschow all recorded two hits each.
Mack Larson suffered the loss as he allowed eight runs on eight hits while striking out five over six innings pitched.
The Lyon College baseball team will return home this weekend to face Park in a three-game American Midwest Conference series. The Scots and Pirates will open up their series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon.
