BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The Lyon College softball team split the series with Lindenwood University-Belleville on Friday afternoon as the Scots were victorious in game one by a score of 5-3 and were edged by the Lynx in the second game, 9-5.
Lyon moves to 22-6 on the season, 9-3 in the AMC. Lindenwood University-Belleville goes to 10-12 on the year, 1-1 in the AMC.
Game One: Lyon 5, LUB 3
The Scots opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Lyon loaded the bases with two outs in the frame and Kendra Kelley coming to bat. Kelley delivered a 2-RBI single to center, scoring Dakota Smith and Riley Shaw.
The Lynx would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom of the second. First, Peyton Curtis hit an RBI single to cut Lyon's lead in half. Then, LUB would scratch two more runs across on an error, giving the hosts a 3-2 lead after two innings of play.
However, the visitors from Batesville answered right back. After Addison Harmon worked a walk and stole second, Cheyenne Black laced a single to left as Harmon came around to score, tying the game at three.
The score would remain tied until the top of the fifth inning. After Faith Cornmesser led the inning off with a single, Cheyenne Black blasted a deep fly over the right field fence for a 2-run home run. This gave the Scots a 5-3 advantage heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The score would remain the same heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Katelynn Platt retired the LYNX 1-2-3 to earn the complete game victory and give the Scots a 5-3 win. Katelyn Platt gave up just one earned run in seven innings of work, while striking out two batters. Offensively, Cheyenne Black led the charge for the Scots as she recorded two hits in the contest, including two RBI's, one run scored, and drew a walk.
Game Two: LUB 9, Lyon 5
The Lynx got on the scoreboard first as Madison Willman hit a 2-run home run to give the hosts a 2-0 lead after the first inning of play.
After a pair of singles by Riley Shaw and Megan Micke put runners on the corners with one out for the Scots, Siobhan Taylor lined out to short. However, Camryn Long came into score on the errant throw. This cut the deficit in half heading into the bottom of the second inning.
The score would remain 2-1 in favor of the Lynx until the bottom of the third inning. LUB loaded the bases with no outs in the frame. Madison Willman delivered an RBI single, scoring Melissa Martinick. Next, Madison Mountain hit a 2-RBI double, giving the Lynx a 5-1 lead. Destinee Frost, then singled, scoring two more Lynx runners. With two outs, Zoe Villa struck an RBI single, giving the hosts an 8-1 advantage after three innings of play.
The Scot trimmed into the lead in the top of the fifth. After a single by Siobhan Taylor, Megan Micke crushed a 2-run home run over the left field fence, cutting the deficit to five. Later in the frame, Lyon loaded the bases with one out. Kendra Kelley hit a sharp ground ball, scoring Faith Cornmesser and trimming LUB's lead to four.
The Lynx would respond with a run of their own as Madison Mountain came around to score on an error, extending their lead to five.
In the top of the sixth, the Scots scratched a run across on a 2-out RBI single by Faith Cornmesser, plating Siobhan Taylor and moving the score to 9-5 in LUB's favor.
The visitors from Batesville were unable to get anything going in the last inning and fell to LUB by a score of 9-5.
Faith Cornmesser started the game in the circle for the Scots as she gave up five runs in two innings of work. Shyanne Pedroza threw the following four innings, allowing four runs, while striking out one. Offensively, Faith Cornmesser paced the Scots as she tallied three hits in the contest, including an RBI and a run scored.
UP NEXT FOR THE SCOTS
The Scots continue the road trip as they face Missouri Baptist University on Saturday with the first game of the doubleheader set for 12:00 p.m.
