CONWAY, Ark. – Mack Larson went the distance and earned a complete-game victory, while Kylan Barnett went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI as the pair helped the Lyon College baseball team to a 7-4 series-finale victory at Central Baptist College on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Scots moved to 16-4 (4-2 American Midwest Conference), while CBC slipped to 10-11 (3-3 AMC).
The Scots broke into the scoring column first against the Mustangs in the top of the second inning. After Ryan Clack, Dalton Ernest and Troy Strack walked to load the bases, Barnett gave the Scots a 1-0 advantage with a sacrifice fly.
CBC tied the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI-single by Austin Kuchinski before the Scots regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Strack started a two-out rally for the Scots with a walk before he wound up on third after stealing second and moving up an extra 90-feet on an errant throw by the Mustangs trying to throw him out at second. Barnett came through for the Scots once again, this time with an RBI-double to center to give Lyon a 2-1 lead.
The Mustangs overtook the lead in the fourth and fifth innings. CBC pushed two runs across in the bottom of the fourth before adding another run in the bottom of the fifth.
Trailing, 4-2, heading into the late innings, the Scots got the offense rolling again, starting in the top of the sixth. After a lead-off walk by Ernest and a one-out single by Barnett, the Scots had runners on the corners for Kyle West. West lifted a ball deep to center field, which allowed Ernest to come home on the sacrifice fly and cut the deficit to one at 4-3. The Scots continued to click on offense as Tristan Buschow, Clack and Tanner Seibel strung together three straight one-out singles to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh. As the inning continued, Ernest walked to load the bases before Barnett got hit by a pitch to bring home another run for the Scots.
Lyon added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth with a two-out rally. Barnett opened up the rally with a single to left before the West brothers – Kyle and Alan – followed with a single each to plate Barnett. With the West brothers on the corners and two away, a wild pitch allowed another run home and extended the Scots' lead to 7-4.
Larson finished off a strong outing by facing the minimum in the ninth. The Mustangs got a one-out single by Jamal Washington before Larson induced a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Larson allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three in the complete-game victory.
Alan West and Buschow added to the offense with two hits each in the game.
The Lyon College baseball team will return home and open up a five-game home stand this Friday with a single nine-inning game against Williams Baptist beginning at 1 p.m.
