NO. 20 BASEBALL CLINCHES SERIES WIN WITH 7-2 VICTORY OVER (RV) MBU

Box Score (PDF)

O'FALLON, Mo. – After splitting the first two games of their series in a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, the 20th ranked Lyon College baseball team and (RV) Missouri Baptist met on Friday morning in the rubber game to decide a series winner at Carshield Field. The Scots used a trio of two-run innings to clinch the series win over the Spartans with a 7-2 victory. Lyon improved to 22-6 (10-4 American Midwest Conference), while MBU fell to 14-8 (7-6 AMC).

A lead-off single by Zane Pritchard in the top of the second inning led to the first run of the game for the Scots. After Dalton Ernest came on to run for Pritchard, Tanner Seibel drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Troy Strack brought home Ernest with an RBI-single to left and gave the Scots a 1-0 advantage.

Missouri Baptist knotted the score at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the third before the Scots responded with their first two-run innings in the top of the fifth. Jake Michener got hit by a pitch to open up the inning before he quickly moved into scoring position after stealing second. Strack came through with another RBI-single – his second of the game – to plate Michener. The MBU outfield struggled to corral the ball on the base hit, as Strack was able to move up to second on the play. The error proved costly for the Spartans as Kylan Barnett singled home Strack to extend the Scots' lead to 3-1.

The Spartans cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Scots responded with two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Kyle West drove in three of the runs between the two frames, while Barnett drove in a run with a single to right-center field.

MBU worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth after a hit-by-pitch and two singles. With two outs in the inning, the Scots went to their bullpen and called on Brock Beacham to close the game. Beacham got the only batter he saw to ground out to Barnett at first to earn the save.

Marcelo Terrazas earned the win on the bump for the Scots. Terrazas struck out seven batters as he allowed two runs on six hits over 8.2 innings pitched.

Strack collected three hits on the day as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Barnett finished with two hits and two RBI, while West drove in three runs on the day.

The Scots will return home for a non-conference doubleheader against Texas A&M-Texarkana on Tuesday at noon.
