O'FALLON, Mo. – The 20th-ranked Lyon College baseball team split a doubleheader to open up its three-game series against (RV) Missouri Baptist on Thursday afternoon at Carshield Field. Missouri Baptist stole game one with a 7-6 walk-off victory before the Scots rallied back and took game two, 11-8. The two teams will play the rubber game on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at Carshield Field.
Lyon moved to 21-6 (8-3 American Midwest Conference) following Thursday's results, while MBU now stands at 14-7 (7-5 AMC).
Game One: (RV) MBU 7, #20 Lyon 6
The Scots took an early lead against the Spartans in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader with two runs in the top of the first. With runners on second and third and one away, Alan West singled up the middle to plate the first run of the game. Later in the inning, Tristan Buschow added to the Scots' lead with an RBI single.
Lyon added to its lead with a run in the second and third innings before the Spartans finally got on the board. MBU scored a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fourth before the Scots added another run in the top of the fifth on a Kylan Barnett solo home run. MBU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as the two teams headed to the seventh inning with the score tied, 5-5.
Lyon took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh after West knocked in a run with another RBI-single, but MBU stole game one on a walk-off two-run home run by Drew Brooks.
Ethan Denney suffered the loss on the mound in relief for the Scots.
West finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.
Game Two: #20 Lyon 11, (RV) MBU 8
Lyon and MBU both put up crooked numbers in the first inning of Thursday's nightcap. The Scots opened up the game with three runs in the top half of the frame before MBU overtook the lead with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
MBU extended its lead to 6-3 with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double by Anthony Enwiya before the Scots began to rally back. Lyon began to chip away in the top of the fourth as Tanner Seibel drove in a run with an RBI-single. The Scots added another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI-ground out by Andrew Schnitzius before scoring three more runs in the top of the sixth. MBU tied the game at 8-8 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Lyon added to its total in the late innings. After West drove in a run with an RBI-single in the top of the eighth, Troy Strack and Barnett added two insurance runs for the Scots in the top of the ninth with an RBI single each.
Reese Chovanec earned the win on the bump as he allowed two runs on three hits while striking out three over four innings of work in relief.
Strack, Barnett and Seibel led the way with three hits each in the game. Barnett and Schnitzius drove in three runs each for the Scots in the nightcap.
