COLUMBIA, Mo. – The No. 3-seed (No. 19-nationally ranked) Lyon College women's basketball team fell into foul trouble early in the contest on Friday night and couldn't dig out of a first-half hole, as the Scots fell to No. 2-seed (No. 3-nationally ranked) Columbia College, 75-60, in the semifinals of the American Midwest Conference Tournament. The Scots fell to 24-7 on the season, while CC improved to 29-3. The Cougars will face No. 1-seed and No. 1-nationally ranked Freed-Hardeman in the championship game of the AMC Tournament on Monday night at 7 p.m. in Henderson, Tenn.
The Scots will look to receive an at-large bid for the NAIA Women's Basketball Division I Championship when the national office releases the bracket on Wednesday at 5 p.m. via Facebook Live. Columbia College raced out to a 9-2 lead over the Scots in the first quarter just under four minutes into the game before a three-pointer by Ali Tuckertrimmed the deficit to four. The Cougars responded with five straight points by Jordan Alford to push its lead to nine before Lizzie Allgood split a pair of free throws to pull the Scots back within eight at 14-6. The two teams went scoreless the final 2:46 of the quarter as Columba took an eight-point advantage into the second period.
The Cougars took advantage of the Scots' foul trouble in the second quarter as Columbia College outscored Lyon, 22-10, in the period. The Scots hung with the Cougars in the third quarter as the two teams scored 21 points each in the period. Columbia College went on to extend its lead to 26 points midway through the fourth quarter before the Scots attempted one final comeback. Alexis Moore opened up the rally with a bucket before Madison Riley scored eight straight points, followed by a pair of free throws by Marleigh Dodson to pull the Scots back within 18 at 73-55 with 1:50 remaining. Dodson added two more points on a put-back before Casey Wallace drilled a three, but time ran out on the Scots' comeback attempt.
Riley finished with a team-high 21 points to lead the Scots, while Katie Turner added 13. Alford led all scorers with a game-high 23 points for the Cougars.
