BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College baseball team and St. Francis (Ill.) were deadlocked at 1-1 through six innings until the Scots broke the game open in the seventh inning. Lyon scored four runs in the seventh and added an insurance run in the eighth to earn a 6-1 series-opening victory over the Fighting Saints. Lyon improved to 3-2 on the season, while USF dropped to 0-1.
Marcelo Terrazas got the ball to start for the Scots on Friday. Terrazas, who was coming off a strong 10-plus inning performance last weekend against No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan, produced another solid outing for the Scots against the Fighting Saints. After allowing a run in the top of the first inning, the righty shut down USF and did not allow a run the rest of the way.
The Scots tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an error by the Fighting Saints' defense and took control of the contest with four runs in the seventh. Troy Strack, Kylan Barnett and Kyle West all reached to open up the inning before Alan West knocked two runners home with a two-run double to left-center field. Andrew Schnitzius was called on to pinch hit for Lyon in the next at-bat and delivered in the clutch with a two-run down the left-field line to extend the Scots' lead to 5-1. A pair of passed balls by USF in the bottom of the eight allowed Lyon to add an insurance run.
The five-run cushion was more than enough for Terrazas as he earned a complete-game victory. Terrazas improved to 1-1 on the year as he allowed the lone run on five hits while striking out three.
Alan West finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and two runs scored. Barnett also recorded a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
The Scots and Fighting Saints will wrap up their series on Saturday with a doubleheader at Scots Field beginning at noon.
