BATESVILLE, Ark. – With excitement surrounding Scots Field for the opening day of the 2019 season, the Lyon College baseball team and No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan did not disappoint, as it took extra innings to decide a winner on Friday afternoon. OKWU scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning and defeated the Scots, 4-1.

The Scots struck first against the visiting Eagles in the bottom of the third inning. Reese Chovanec started the inning with a lead-off single before moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Dalton Ernest. Chovanec came around to score later in the inning on an error by OKWU and gave the Scots a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until the top of the seventh inning when the Eagles answered back to tie the game at 1-1. John Lantigua hit a one-out triple to right and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Brice Smith.

Marcelo Terrazas and Landon Williams kept the game deadlocked at 1-1 until the top of the 11th inning. Terrazas went 10 strong innings before the Eagles bats came alive against the righty in the 11th. After a hit batter started the inning, Colton Kelly reached on a bunt single to put runners at first and second with no outs. Ryan Jones singled to center to give the Eagles a one-run advantage. OKWU added two more runs in the frame and held the Scots scoreless in the bottom of the inning to hold on for the win.

Terrazas allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over 10-plus innings pitched. He struck out five batters in his season debut. Landon Williams picked up the win, tossing five innings of scoreless relief.

Chovanec and Alan West both collected two hits each for the Scots.

The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at noon at Scots field.
