No. 18 Scots’ Defense Locks Down Owls in Second Half

The 18th-ranked Lyon College women’s basketball teams held William Woods to just 10 points combined between the final two quarters

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 18th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team led by just six points at halftime but the Scots locked down defensively and limited William Woods to just 10 points combined between the final two quarters as the Scots picked up a 53-34 win on Saturday in Becknell Gymnasium for Military Appreciation Day.
 
Lyon will end the 2019 portion of its schedule at 11-1 (7-0 American Midwest Conference), while William Woods fell to 8-4 (3-4 AMC).
 
The first quarter saw the largest scoring output between the Scots and Owls as the two teams combined for 34 total points. A jumper by Liz Henderson gave the Scots an 18-14 lead before the Owls cut the deficit to 18-16 just before the end of the quarter on a bucket by Carleigh Jenkins.
 
Henderson opened up the scoring in the second quarter for the Scots with a three-pointer off a dish by Jade Giron before the Owls quickly answered back with a pair of free throws by Jenkins and a layup by Katie French to pull back within one just moments later.
 
The Scots took their largest lead of the half on a bucket in the paint by Marleigh Dodson that put the score at 30-22 in favor of Lyon before WWU scored the final two points of the quarter on a pair of free throws by Jenkins.
 
Lyon came out on a mission and locked down defensively in the second half as the Scots allowed just six points in the third quarter and four points in the fourth. After extending its lead to 40-30 after the third period, the Scots began to pull away from the Owls in the fourth quarter. Madison Riley knocked down a three just 10 seconds in before Kristen Baham scored on a put-back to push the Scots lead to 15. WWU added a bucket each by Jazlyn Drake and Kaycee Gerald but a three-pointer by Henderson and a pair of free throws by Giron gave the Scots a 19-point victory.
 
Henderson led all scorers with a game-high 15 points while Riley and Giron added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Jenkins finished with a team-high 11 points for WWU.
 
The Scots will open up the 2020 calendar year with a home game against Central Baptist College on Jan. 4 at 1 p.m.
