BATESVILLE, Ark. – For much of the first half, it appeared as if every shot the 18th-ranked Lyon College basketball team took went into the basket during the Scots' American Midwest Conference game against Stephens College on Thursday night. Lyon shot 75% (24-of-32) from the floor during the first two quarters and rode that hot start to a 104-59 victory over the Stars.
Lyon improved to 10-1 (6-0 AMC) with the win, while Stephens fell to 3-6 (1-5 AMC).
Stephens kept the game close through the first four minutes of the contest as the Stars knotted the score at 9-9 with a layup by Cedreanna Lee. That was when the Scots began to catch fire from the field. Lyon went on to knock down eight of its next 12 shots from the field and took a 31-16 lead over Stephens after the first quarter.
The Scots did not slow down at the start of the second quarter as
Alexis Moore opened up the period with a three-pointer before
Haley Wesley followed with a bucket in the paint. Moments later,
Marleigh Dodson got in on the scoring mix as she scored a layup on a dish by
Katie Turner that opened up a stretch that saw the Scots convert on nine of their final 10 shots from the field the rest of the quarter as Lyon extended its lead to 64-24 at the half.
Lyon extended its lead to as many as 48 points late in the third quarter on a three-pointer by
Kaleah Davis just before the buzzer as the Scots cruised the rest of the way to a 45-point victory.
Liz Henderson led all scorers with a game-high 18 points for the Scots. Davis added 14 points off the bench, while
Madison Riley (13 points), Turner (11 points) and Moore (11 points) all finished in double figures as well. Makenzie Jemes led the Stars with 16 points.
The Scots will play their final game of the 2019 calendar year on Saturday when they host William Woods for Military Appreciation Day. All former and active-duty military personnel will be admitted free for Saturday's game which tips off at 1 p.m.
