Scots Secure Victory over Trojans on Senior Night

The Lyon College volleyball team prevailed in four sets as the Scots celebrated their six seniors tonight

BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College volleyball team welcomed Hannibal-LaGrange University to Becknell Gymnasium tonight for the Scots' senior night match. In fitting style, the Lyon seniors stepped up to propel the Scots to a four-set victory over the Trojans.

With the victory, the Scots reach the 20-win mark for the season, tying the 2005 season that saw the Lyon College volleyball team win 20 matches.

Prior to the start of the match, the Scots recognized their six seniors – Destiny Nunez, Ellie Embry, Iva Popovic, Gracen Ratliff, Kendra Kelley, and Michayla Shanks – for their hard work and dedication throughout their careers.

GAME FLOW
Both teams exchanged 25-21 victories in the first two sets of the match. With the score tied at one set apiece, Hannibal-LaGrange University jetted out to a 5-0 third-set lead. The Scots quickly responded, though, as they trimmed HLG's lead to two points at 16-14. Then, Lyon would use a 4-1 run to take their first lead of the frame, 18-17. Kendra Kelley gave the Scots the lead on one of her eight kills in the contest, assisted by Ellie Embry. Both sides would exchange points until the score was 23-23. Lyon's seniors showed their veteran leadership to win the final two points of the set and take a 2-1 lead as the teams switched sides for the fourth stanza. Kendra Kelley closed out the third set with one of her team-leading four kills on the night.

Similar to the previous three sets, the fourth set was another see-saw affair as both sides held slim leads in the early stages of the frame. HLG extended their advantage to four points, 7-3. However, the Scots stormed right back to quickly take a 13-12 lead midway through the set. With the score knotted at 16 apiece, Lyon converted on the next three rallies to extend their lead, 19-16. The Trojans fought their way back in the match, closing the gap to just two points at 21-19. Lyon, though, continued to win the most crucial points of the match as one of Michayla Shanks's 12 kills in the contest clinched the fourth set, 25-21, and 20th victory of the season for the Scots.
