BATESVILLE, Ark. – The Lyon College men's basketball team (6-1, 2-0 AMC) caused havoc on the defensive end all throughout the game as the Scots limited Missouri Baptist (4-3, 0-2) to just 30.6% (15-for-49) shooting from the field. The Scots, however, shot 54% (27-for-50) from the field and 46.7% (7-for-15) from beyond the arc as Lyon cruised to a 71-49 American Midwest Conference victory on Saturday. The 6-1 start for the Scots is tied for the best record through the first seven games in program history.
Fairs Verlasevic knocked down a jumper with 15:00 left in the first half to tie the game at 8-8 before the Scots began to pull away from the Spartans. Hunter Daley capped off an 8-1 run for the Scots as Lyon extended its lead to 16-9 just two minutes later. The Scots continued to find success on the offensive end and locked down defensively as a layup by Jonathan Iliya gave Lyon a 32-22 lead at the half.
Missouri Baptist pulled back within five points within the first five minutes of the second half as a free throw by Brendon Hardy trimmed the Scots' lead to 36-31. After the Scots pushed their lead back up to double-digits, the Spartans pulled back within single-digits once more before Lyon took full control of the game. The Scots held the Spartans to just four points over an eight-minute stretch as Lyon extended its lead to as many as 20 points. Lyon ended the game with a bucket each from Iliya, Daley and Ray Price on the Scots' final three possessions.
Daley paced the Scots offensively with a game-high 20 points, while Winston Peace recorded his first-career double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds). Iliya and Price also finished in double figures scoring with 12 points and 11 points, respectively. Hasaan DeCarolis led MBU with 18 points.
