Shanks and Kelley’s Double-Doubles Propel Scots to Victory over PSC

Lyon College Volleyball Bested Philander Smith College on Saturday Morning

BATESVILLE, Ark. – After defeating Central Baptist College last night, the Lyon College volleyball team was back on the court bright and early this morning to take on Philander Smith College for a 10:00 a.m. start. Similar to last night's contest, the Scots dropped the first set, but won the next three sets to defeat the Lady Panthers (23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-19).

Lyon improves to 17-12 on the season and 5-4 in American Midwest Conference action, while Philander Smith College falls to 13-8 overall.

GAME FLOW
After the visitors claimed the first set, 25-23, the Scots opened the second stanza on an 11-4 run. Lyon continued to increase their lead as they closed out the set on a Kendra Kelley kill, 25-14.

Even though PSC won the first two rallies of the third frame, the Scots quickly responded as they rattled off four consecutive points of their own. Three straight aces from Maggee Hobson completed the 4-0 run. PSC closed the gap on the home squad and knotted the match at 15 apiece. Both sides exchanged points until the Scots held a slim 23-22 lead in the later stages of the third set. Crucial kills from Michayla Shanks and Maria Eleni Bampiri gave the Scots a third-set victory and a 2-1 advantage in sets.

Lyon jetted out to an early 12-4 lead in the fourth stanza. PSC responded, though, closing the gap at 13-11. The Scots immediately converted on four straight rallies to widen their lead at 17-11. Even though the Lady Panthers would cut Lyon's advantage to two points, 21-19, the Scots never looked rattled as Lyon won the next four points to clinch the fourth set, 25-19, and defeat PSC, 3-1.
