BATESVILLE, Ark. – Since their season-opening loss to then-(RV) William Penn at the Grand View Classic, the 19th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team has been one of the hottest teams in the country as the Scots have rolled off 10-straight wins, including a 70-48 win over Philander Smith College on Thursday night. With PSC leading, 9-8, with just over five minutes left in the quarter, the Scots quickly found themselves ahead once again after back-to-back buckets by French and a three by Alexis Moore. PSC added one point late in the quarter on a free throw by Ineka Clark, but Lyon remained out front, 15-10.
Philanders Smith rallied back to overtake the lead, 17-15, on a three by Briauna Mitchell, but a basket each from Katie Turner and Madison Riley put the Scots ahead once again. Lyon began to pull away from the Panthers as French, Turner and Liz Henderson all recorded two points each before Ali Tuckernetted eight straight points for the Scots with a pair of threes from the corner and a jumper in the lane. A three by Henderson would give the Scots a 36-21 advantage with 30 seconds left in the half as PSC would add another free throw to put the score at 36-22 in favor of Lyon at the break.
Lyon extended its lead 24 points at 48-24 on a three by Tucker in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but PSC began to rally back into the game. Honchea Thornton opened up the comeback with a bucket before Amesha Hamlet-Brown six straight points to pull the Panthers back within 18. The Panthers trimmed the deficit to 15 late in the quarter but a three-point play by Moore pushed the Scots' lead back up to 18.
Philander Smith attempted one final comeback in the fourth quarter as the Panthers pulled within 14 points, but the Scots ended the game on a 15-7 run to seal the victory.
French (16), Tucker (14), Henderson (13) and Riley (11) all finished in double-digits scoring, while Turner added eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
