BATESVILLE, Ark. – The 20th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team scored early and often as the Scots cruised to an 84-49 win over Williams Baptist to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the American Midwest Conference. WBU dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the AMC after the loss.
Madison Riley got the Scots started early in the first quarter as her layup at the 8:02 mark brought the biggest roar of the night. After the fans saw her layup go through the basket, stuffed toys flooded the court as part of Furry Frenzy Toy Toss night, in which toys will be donated to the United Way's Angel Tree program. Riley went on to score seven of the next nine points for the Scots as Lyon extended its lead to 11-6 with 4:42 left in the opening quarter. The Scots continued to roll offensively and ended the quarter on a 12-5 run to take a 23-11 lead after the first period.
Williams Baptist opened up the second quarter with a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to four at 27-23. Liz Henderson began to take over the game and went on a big run of her own as she scored 12 of the Scots' final 14 points of the quarter to give Lyon a 41-32 lead at the half.
Henderson picked up right where she left off and opened up the third quarter adding two more points to her total before Katie Turner scored back-to-back buckets for the Scots. It was all Lyon the rest of the quarter, getting contribution from Henderson, Samantha French, Ali Tucker, Riley and Lizzie Allgood as the Scots took a 65-40 lead after three quarters. Lyon went on to outscore the Eagles, 19-9, in the final period and picked up their second conference win of the season.
Henderson tied her career-high as she led all scorers with 27 points. Riley added 20 points and dished out eight assists, while French posted her second consecutive double-double as she finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Lyon will look for its fifth-straight win as Scots will travel to Parkville, Mo., on Thursday to take on Park in another AMC matchup at 5:30 p.m.
