HANNIBAL, Mo. – The 20th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team pulled away from Hannibal-LaGrange in the second half as the Scots outscored the Trojans, 50-26, and earned an 86-67 win in their 2018-19 American Midwest Conference opener.
The Scots improved their winning streak to three games and now stand at 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the AMC, while HLG dropped to 2-5 (0-2 AMC).
Lyon and Hannibal-LaGrange opened up the game with a shootout as both teams match each other shot-for-shot. After a three-pointer by HLG's Kaylee Elmore at the 6:14 mark in the first quarter gave the Trojans a 10-8 lead, Hannibal-LaGrange would go on a 6-0 run to take a 16-8 advantage over the Scots with just over five minutes left in the quarter.
The Scots managed to cut the deficit to four at 17-13 after a bucket each by Liz Henderson and Madison Riley, but the Trojans answered back with a pair of threes to extend its lead back to eight at 23-15 with 2:21 left in the quarter. Henderson and Riley once again worked the Scots back into the game as the pair combined for the next eight points for the Scots to knot the score at 23-23. In the final possession of the quarter, HLG regained the lead after a bucket by Lorren Walther to take a 25-23 advantage after the first quarter.
The late basket by Walther to end the first quarter sparked the Trojans offensively to open up the second period. Emma Anderson opened up the scoring for HLG with a bucket before the Trojans would go on a 12-6 run, which was capped off by another three by Elmore to take a 39-29 lead. Lyon would cut the Trojans' lead in half late in the quarter as Katie Turner hit a couple buckets around a three by Whitney Wagganer to put the score at 41-36 in favor of HLG at the half.
Lyon came out in the second half firing on all cylinders as Riley got the Scots started with a three pointer to open up the third quarter. Henderson would go on a big run of her own as she scored eight of the next 10 points for the Scots as Lyon pulled ahead, 49-46, after a three-pointer by Henderson with 6:15 left in the quarter. The Scots continued to keep their foot on the gas the rest of the quarter as Lyon outscored HLG, 12-6, over the final six minutes of the third quarter to take a 61-52 lead into the final period.
The Scots extended their lead to double-digits after Samantha French put Lyon ahead, 63-52, with a layup to open up the fourth quarter. The Trojans would answer back with a quick, 7-0, run to make it a two-possession game, but a pair of free throws by Riley opened up an 8-0 run for the Scots to put them ahead by double-digits once again. The Scots would cruise the rest of the way and earned a 19-point win in their conference opener.
Riley finished one point shy of tying her career-high as she netted a team-high 27 points to lead the Scots. Henderson added 20 points, with French recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Elmore finished with a game-high 29 points to lead the Trojans offensively.
The Lyon College women's basketball team will return to action on Nov. 27 against Williams Baptist for the annual Toy Toss game. Tip-off for the Toy Toss game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
