Zach Ruot serves as the Defensive Coordinator for the Lyon Football program. With a wealth of experience and a strong coaching background, he brings a ton of knowledge and expertise to the team. In 2023, he is entering his fourth season as the Defensive Coordinator, leading the defensive unit to excel on the field.
Prior to joining the Lyon College coaching staff, Ruot served as the Assistant Head Coach, Special Teams Coordinator, and defensive backs coach at MacMurray College in 2019. During his time there, he made significant contributions to the team's success, providing valuable guidance and leadership.
Before his tenure at MacMurray, Ruot spent three seasons at UW-Eau Claire, where he held multiple coaching positions. He served as the defensive line coach, strength and conditioning coordinator, Kick-off Coordinator, and safeties coach. His impact was felt as he played a crucial role in improving the team's red zone defense and third-down conversion rates. In fact, under Ruot's guidance, the team ranked 14th in the nation in red zone defense and ninth in sacks during his final year with the program.
Ruot's coaching journey also took him to Luther College, where he spent two seasons coaching receivers and tight ends. Additionally, he served as the recruiting coordinator, showcasing his ability to identify and recruit talented student-athletes. Ruot's dedication and contributions were also recognized during his time at MacMurray College, where he worked as the linebackers coach and strength and conditioning coordinator in 2012 and 2013.
As a committed coach, Ruot's career began at Jacksonville High School (Ill.), where he served as the varsity receivers coach, honing his skills and laying the foundation for his coaching career. He further developed his expertise by working as a Strength and Conditioning Intern at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, gaining valuable insights into athletic performance and training methodologies.
Ruot earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sport and Fitness Administration/Management from Illinois College in 2012. During his time at Illinois College, he excelled both academically and athletically, earning three letters with the Blueboys.
With his extensive experience, coaching acumen, and dedication to player development, Zach Ruot is an invaluable asset to the Lyon College football program. As the Defensive Coordinator, he continues to guide and inspire the defensive unit, striving for excellence both on and off the field.
