Lyon College Athletic Director Kevin Jenkins announced that Travis Linville has been hired as the first head coach of the Scots’ archery program.
Linville comes to Lyon after serving as an archery coach for the past six years for elementary, middle school and senior high students.
“We are very excited to have Travis here at Lyon College as our head archery coach,” said Jenkins. “Travis is a good fit for Lyon and has a good base of archery contacts throughout the state of Arkansas. His expertise that he can provide will help benefit the program immediately.”
Linville has been in charge of hosting approximately five tournaments per year for students in the elementary through high school levels. His tournaments host roughly 30-40 schools with 650-700 archers in attendance throughout the archery season. Several of the archers he has coached have won individual trophies and medals, and his team has improved each year in overall standings.
Linville’s experience with archery includes assessing athletic performance, helping the archers find their strengths and weaknesses, communication of instructions and motivating athletes. Linville is a certified coach with both the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and USA Archery, and has recently started combined NASP/Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) tournaments.
“I’m excited to be laying the foundation for this because it is going to give us a leg up as far as talent goes, as far as experience goes,” Linville said. “We are going to dominate.”
“As far as bringing archery to the college level, Lyon College will be the first college in the state of Arkansas to do this program,” said Linville. “So it is very exciting, it is something new, and it covers a range of disciplines. You have all sorts of different types of bows and targets, and it is open for both men and women.”
