BATESVILLE, Ark. — Lyon College football battled until the final seconds Saturday night at Bad Boy Mowers Stadium, but the Scots fell just short against Greenville University, dropping a 33-32 decision to the Panthers in a back-and-forth contest. Scots move to 1-2 on the 2026 season.
The Scots built a 32-19 advantage early in the fourth quarter before Greenville rallied with two late touchdowns, including the game-winning 15-yard touchdown pass with 37 seconds remaining. Lyon had one final opportunity, but a 50-yard field goal attempt by Jesus Romero-Castillo was blocked as time expired.
Lyon opened the scoring on its first offensive possession, putting together an 80-yard, nine-play drive that ended when Grayson Johnson connected with Jace Birkes on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter. Romero-Castillo added the extra point to give the Scots a 7-0 lead.
The Lyon defense then forced Greenville to turn the ball over on downs inside the Scots' 40-yard line, setting up another scoring opportunity. Lyon carried that momentum into the second quarter as Johnson found Kingston Herring for a 17-yard touchdown with 12:19 remaining, extending the lead to 14-0.
Greenville responded with a 35-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 14-7. Lyon answered with another lengthy drive, marching 59 yards on 13 plays before Romero-Castillo connected on a 23-yard field goal with 3:32 left in the half.
The Panthers closed the half with a 90-yard touchdown pass, sending the teams into the break with Lyon holding a 17-13 advantage.
Greenville took its first lead of the night early in the third quarter, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run to move ahead 19-17. Lyon answered immediately with an eight-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Malaki Lockhart to Javarion Williams, putting the Scots back in front 23-19 with 5:03 remaining in the quarter.
Romero-Castillo added his second field goal of the night late in the third, hitting from 31 yards to push the Lyon advantage to 26-19. The Scots then opened the fourth quarter with another touchdown drive, traveling 72 yards in five plays before Tky Posey powered his way into the end zone from seven yards out. Lyon led 32-19 with 12:54 remaining.
Greenville continued to battle, putting together a 13-play, 78-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run with 6:20 remaining. The Panthers cut the Lyon lead to 32-26.
After Lyon was unable to extend its lead on its next possession, Greenville mounted its final drive. The Panthers converted a fourth-and-17 from their own 44-yard line before eventually reaching the Lyon 15. With 37 seconds remaining, Greenville found the end zone on a 15-yard touchdown pass and converted the extra point to take a 33-32 lead.
The Scots immediately moved into Greenville territory on their final possession. Lyon reached the Greenville 34-yard line before Romero-Castillo attempted a 50-yard field goal as time expired, but the kick was blocked, sealing the one-point Greenville victory.
Lyon finished the night with 449 yards of total offense, including 277 passing yards and 172 rushing yards. The Scots converted 8-of-12 third downs and recorded 25 first downs while scoring on all six of their trips to the red zone.
Williams led the Lyon receiving corps with eight catches for 120 yards and a touchdown, while Herring also hauled in eight passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Noah Osborne added a 53-yard reception.
Posey paced the Lyon rushing attack with 90 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Donovan Jordan added 41 yards on 10 attempts, while Lockhart contributed 23 rushing yards.
Johnson completed 7-of-8 passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns, while Lockhart finished 14-of-22 for 207 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Defensively, Zander Week led the Scots with seven total tackles. Clarence Mucherson and William Littell each recorded six tackles, while Jason Crawford Jr. finished with five. Zavier Jones added an interception and returned it 20 yards.
