BATESVILLE, AR - Lyon volleyball went back and forth with the Williams Baptist Eagles, taking them to five sets in the season opener. Scots just fell short in a few instances falling 2-3 and are now 0-1 on the season.
The Scots came back from a 5-2 deficit in the opening set, pulling even on
Reyleigh Twist's kill and later moving ahead 8-6. After Williams Baptist tied it 8-8, a service error returned the serve to the Scots and
Olivia Locke's service turn produced four straight points for a 13-8 lead. Williams Baptist worked back to 17-17, and after another Twist kill put the Scots up 18-17, Williams Baptist tied it and scored the next three listed points, including a service ace, before later reaching set point at 24-19. The Scots stayed alive with kills by Neveah Ghan,
Keeley Beary and Ghan to get within 24-22, but Williams Baptist took the final point to win the set 25-22.
After Williams Baptist moved in front 4-1 on a service ace, the Scots pulled even at 4-4 on Twist's kill during
Sofia Santis' service turn. The set stayed tight through the Scots' 16-15 lead, with Beary,
Pascha Wistrand, Twist and
Morgan Harrelson recording kills as the teams traded points. A Williams Baptist service error put the Scots ahead 17-15, and Twist's serve carried a five-point stretch that included a team service ace, a Ghan kill from Harrelson and a Harrelson-Ghan block to make it 22-15. Williams Baptist scored five straight points to cut it to 22-20, but the Scots finished the set 25-21 on
Ella Gardner's serve.
Williams Baptist moved ahead 5-1 early in the third set behind a Scots service error, two Scots attack or block errors and a service ace. The Scots worked back with kills from Wistrand, Harrelson and Ghan, along with a Twist service ace, and Beary later put down consecutive kills from Gardner to bring the Scots even at 9-9 and ahead 10-9. The Scots pushed the margin to 20-17 on Beary's kill, but Williams Baptist scored the next three points to tie the set at 20-20 before
Ryan Russell answered with a kill from
Jenna Good. Williams Baptist moved back in front at 23-21, and after Beary's kill brought the Scots within 23-22, the visitors took the final two points to close the set 25-22.
The Scots moved in front early in the fourth set, getting kills from Beary, Wistrand, Harrelson and Russell while building a 12-7 lead. Wistrand added kills to make it 13-8 and 15-9, and the Scots reached 17-11 on Twist's kill from Gardner. The Scots stretched the margin to 21-12 behind consecutive Harrelson kills from Good and a block by Russell and Harrelson, but Williams Baptist scored four straight points from 23-15 to close within 23-19. A Williams Baptist service error gave the Scots set point at 24-19, and after the Eagles extended the set once, another service error finished the Scots' 25-20 win.
A Williams Baptist service error gave the Scots the first point of the fifth set, but Williams Baptist scored the next four to move ahead 4-1. Ghan answered with a kill from Gardner, and the Scots later got points on a Beary block, a Twist kill from Good, a Harrelson block and a Beary kill to stay within 11-7. Williams Baptist moved to set point at 14-7 on consecutive Scots attack errors, and after Wistrand put down a kill from Gardner, Williams Baptist closed the set 15-8.
Beary finished with 17 points, 11 kills, four solo blocks and two service aces. Twist recorded five service aces, eight kills and 14 digs. Good posted 16 assists and 15 digs. Santis also collected 15 digs for the Scots.
