Fulton, MO - Lyon College Scots softball dropped both games of a doubleheader against the Westminster College Blue Jays on Monday afternoon. The Scots fell 6-4 in game one before dropping game two 10-2. With today's results Scots are now 4-18 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.
Lyon showed flashes offensively across both contests, collecting 12 hits on the day, but timely hitting from Westminster proved to be the difference. Skylar Foreman was the lead hitter for the Scots recording two hits and driving in three RBI, her big hit being a two run homer in game 2. Rebecca Rodriguez notched an RBI and a hit, while Kori Cox drove in an RBI. Chloe McCance recorded 3 hits through both games.
Game 1
Lyon 4, Westminster 6
The Scots jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off a steady offensive push from the Blue Jays.
Lyon struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on a Westminster error and timely hitting. McCance and Mia Sanchez each reached safely before Foreman drove in a run, and Rodriguez followed with an RBI single to give the Scots a 2-0 lead.
Westminster answered in the second inning, taking advantage of miscues to plate three runs and move ahead 3-2. Lyon responded in the third when McCance doubled and later came around to score on a defensive error to tie the game at 3-3.
The Blue Jays regained the lead in the fourth, using aggressive baserunning and another Lyon error to plate two runs and go up 5-3. Westminster added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI double.
Lyon attempted a comeback in the sixth inning as Taylor Gongre reached base and later scored on a groundout from Kori Cox to cut the deficit to 6-4. However, the Scots were unable to generate further offense down the stretch.
McCance led Lyon with two hits and two runs scored, while Rodriguez added an RBI. Foreman also contributed a run driven in as Lyon finished with eight hits in the contest.
Game 2
Lyon 2, Westminster 10
The second game saw Lyon take an early lead before Westminster used a pair of big innings to pull away.
After two scoreless innings, Lyon broke through in the third. Sanchez reached base and Foreman delivered the big swing with a two-run home run to give the Scots a 2-0 advantage.
Westminster responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning, erupting for five runs highlighted by a three-run home run to take control of the game. The Blue Jays continued their offensive momentum in the fourth, adding five more runs to extend the lead to 10-2.
Lyon managed four hits in the game, including a double from McCance and the home run from Foreman, but could not close the gap.
Gongre started in the circle for the Scots, while Madison DeRoussel worked in relief as Westminster's offense totaled nine hits and ten runs in the contest.
Lyon will hit the field tomorrow in St. Louis, Missouri as they take on the Webster University Gorloks in a double header starting at 11:00 AM.
