Scots fight but drop doubleheader at East Texas Baptist

Marshall, TX - Scots offense was active recording 18 hits and 13 runs through two games today, but was not enough to overcome East Texas Baptist. Scots fell after a late comeback in the first game 11-8, then dropped the second after matching the Tigers hitting but leaving five runners on base. With the results, Lyon moves to 8-5 on season and remain 3-0 in conference play.

Eli Marcotte and Landon Swallow led the way offensively, with Marcotte hitting a home run to drive in three RBI and Swallow notching two hits to send home three RBI. Parker Thompson and Slade Inman each added a hit and two RBI. Braden Bramlett and Jarius Edwards each added three hits and an RBI, with Bramlett's being off a home run.

Game 1

Lyon 8, East Texas Baptist 11

The first game of the doubleheader saw the Scots battle back from an early deficit but ultimately fall short against a strong Tigers offense.

Lyon struck first in the second inning when Braden Bramlett launched a solo home run to left center to give the Scots an early 1-0 lead. East Texas Baptist responded in the bottom half of the inning with a six-run frame that included three home runs to take a 6-1 advantage. Scots offense through the third and fourth was stymied as the Tigers defense allowed on only one man on base through a hit by pitch.

The Tigers added one more run in the third and four more in the fourth to stretch the lead to 11-1. Lyon's offense was revised and began to chip away in the fifth inning as Marcotte blasted a three-run home run to bring the Scots back within striking distance, 11-4.

The Scots would quiet East Texas' batters with three quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, then leave a Tigers' runner stranded in scoring position in the sixth to keep the deficit at six runs. The rally continued in the seventh inning. After loading the bases, Swallow delivered on a big hit with a triple to center field clearing the bases, driving in three runs. Swallow later came home on an RBI ground out by Inman to cut the deficit to 11-8. East Texas Baptist would take the first of the double header with a final strikeout in the 7th.

Marcotte led the Scots offense with a big home run and three RBI, while Swallow drove in three runs with his triple. Edwards and Tyler Hahn each added two hits in the contest. Bramlett scored the first run of the game off his early homer, while Inman drove in one RBI.

Game 2

Lyon 5, East Texas Baptist 11

The second game of the day featured another competitive start before the Tigers pulled away in the middle innings.

Lyon opened the scoring in the third inning when Inman launched a solo home run to left center to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. East Texas Baptist answered quickly, scoring two runs in the third on a two-run homer before adding another run in the fourth to move ahead 3-1.

The Tigers extended their lead with a three-run fifth inning and a four-run sixth to build a commanding advantage.

Lyon mounted a late rally in the eighth inning. Ashton Compton and Kooper McCoy opened the inning with singles before Thompson delivered a two-run double to bring them both home, 10-3. Edwards followed with an RBI single and Inman added another RBI on a ground out to make the score 10-5. The rally would come to an end with runners on the corners as Marcotte flied out to the left fielder.  Tigers would tack on another run in bottom of the eighth, 11-5. Scots were unable to get anything going offensively in ninth as East Texas took the third game in the series.

Compton and Bramlett each recorded two hits for the Scots, while Thompson provided two RBI off the bench. Inman homered and drove in two RBI, while Edwards accounted for a hit and an RBI.

Scots will head home to Batesville were they will continue SLIAC conference play, facing the Westminster College Blue Jays this Friday, March 20th and Saturday, March 21st.
