Louisville, KY – A back and forth battle towards the end of regulation saw great fight from the Scots. However, Spalding University was able to hold and maintain their lead with a minute left in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles would secure the victory and the Scots are now 8-9 on the season with a 5-4 conference record.
Natalya Kaza led the team in scoring with 19 points and recorded team highs in rebounds with 11 and recorded five steals.
Kaysharia Woods was able to contribute 16 points and three steals.
Savanna Lopez follows Kaza in rebounds recording 10.
Alyssa Abascal makes her return to the court with a team high of four assists.
Lyon College started the game strong in the first quarter, with
Kaysharia Woods hitting a key three-pointer to help the Scots take an early 8-6 lead, assisted by
Savanna Lopez.
Natalya Kaza then made another three-pointer and a fast-break layup to extend the lead to 10-6. However, the Golden Eagles battled back, closing the gap, and the first quarter ended with Lyon leading 17-13.
In the second quarter, the Scots maintained their offensive pressure early on.
Paris Halliburton scored a jumper, assisted by
Alyssa Abascal, followed by a couple of free throws from Kaza.
Molly Mason and Woods then made layups to give the Scots their largest lead of the half, 29-19. Spalding chipped away at the lead throughout the rest of the second quarter, eventually tying the game at 31-31 before taking a narrow 32-31 lead into halftime.
The third quarter began with Lyon's
Kaysharia Woods hitting a key three-pointer, assisted by
Alyssa Abascal, to regain a one-point lead at 34-33. Following some back-and-forth action,
Molly Mason made consecutive free throws, and
Natalya Kaza added free throws of her own, to put the Scots back up 43-39. Later in the quarter, Kaza scored a layup to extend the lead to 46-41. However, the Golden Eagles continued to fight back, and the quarter ended with the Scots clinging to a slim 52-54 deficit.
In the final quarter, the game remained tight. Mason made a jumper, assisted by
Coi Bradley, to tie the game at 54-54. Kaza then tied it again with a fast-break layup, again assisted by Bradley, at 56-56. With five minutes remaining, Mason scored a layup to tie the game at 60-60, assisted by
Savanna Lopez. Despite the efforts of players like
Paris Halliburton, who made a jumper late in the game, Lyon was outscored in the final minutes, ultimately falling 63-69 to the Golden Eagles.
Scots will head to Greenville University on Saturday, January 31
st with a scheduled start time of 1:00 PM.
