Scots split in Louisville, sweep Spalding before falling to Webster in five

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Lyon College volleyball team opened its Saturday doubleheader in dominating fashion, sweeping the Spalding University Golden Eagles in three sets (25-15, 25-19. 25-10), before dropping a hard-fought five-set battle to the Webster University Gorlocks (25-14,17-25, 25-21, 20-25,13-15).  With the split, Lyon moved to 7–8 overall and 3–2 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play.

Below are recaps of both matches. 


Lyon 3, Spalding 0 


In the first set Spalding grabbed an early 5–3 edge off two back-to-back service aces, but Lyon quickly responded. Keeley Beary and Mollie McCoy with assists from Caroline Snow delivered back-to-back kills to spark a 6–2 run, putting the Scots ahead 9–7. Eagles would tie things off a kill and a service ace, 9-9. From there, Scots would respond with a 5-0 run off two back-to-back hills from Avery Fuller, a kill from Cristen Cleveland set up by Madeline Hopson, and two Eagles errors, 14-9. Spalding never closed within five the rest of the way, as Scots hit another run 4-0 with kills from Beary, McCoy, and Reyleigh Twist making it 19-11. Snow would set up McCoy two more kills in the final stretch as Fuller would seal the first set 25-15. 

The second set was tight early, with the teams trading points to a 5-5 tie. McCoy and an error by Spalding put Scots ahead, 7-5, Eagles would close the lead and Fuller would drive in a kill to ensure a tie, 8-8. A Spalding error would lead off a 5-1 run as Fuller and Snow would send aces over the net, while Twist and McCoy each drove in a kill, 13-9. Lyon would take a six point lead off a kill from Beary and errors by the Eagles, 17-11. Spalding would get close off a kill and errors, 19-16, but Neveah Ghan drive in a kill from Hopson to make it 20-16. This 4-0 run would continue with an ace from Fuller and a block by Beary and Twist, 23-16. Ghan would set up Beary to find the hardwood, taking the match 25-19. 

The Scots dominated the final set from start to finish. Scots would take the lead early off a block by McCoy, kill from Cleveland, and an error by the Eagles, 3-2. Olivia Locke would extend the lead to two with a service ace,5-3. Lyon would go on a 10-0 run with Hopson tallying five service aces, 16-4. Teams would trade points but han and Cleveland would ensure Scots maintained the lead, 19-7. Twist would notch a kill and an ace extend the lead to fourteen, 22-8. McCoy would send another kill to the floor, 24-10, as Fuller would block Spalding to the match in three sets. 

McCoy lead the team in kills (10), hitting percentage (.571), and points (11). She contributed two digs and one block.  Hopson lead in service aces with six, she contributed ten assists and four digs. Fuller led with two blocks, she added five kills, one dig, and two aces. Snow ran the offense with 17 assists, she contributed one ace and three digs. Defensively, Locke led with ten digs, she added two aces and five assists. 


Lyon 2, Webster 3 


Lyon started fast, racing to an 6–1 lead behind two McCoy and two Cleveland kills. Errors from Webster put the Scots up 10-4. McCoy would maintain the Scots lead at seven with a kill set up by Snow, 14-7. Gorlocks defense would close the lead to just four of back-to-back blocks, 14-11.  The Scots extended the advantage to 17-11 after Beary and Fuller drove in kills along with a Locke service ace. Teams would trade points, 19-14, but Fuller would drive in four service aces to take the first set. 

The Gorlocks turned the tide in the second, but Lyon put up a fight.  After Spalding led 7–5, the Scots reeled off six straight points, coming off three kils from Twist, an ace from Snow, and errors by the Gorlocks,13-9. Spalding would retake the lead, 14-13, after strong defensive plays and three kills. A 9-0 run would follow soon for Webster as their team played well defensively and offensively, 23-14. Gorlocks would drive in two kills to take the second set. 

Scots were up early in the third off kills from Ghan and Cleveland, 8-4. Both sides would trade points with McCoy, Cleveland, and Ghan contributing kills to maintain Lyon's lead, 12-8. A Beary kill tied the score at 13-13 before the Gorlocks went on a 5-1 run, 18-14. Scots fought back with Snow setting up kills from McCoy and Cleveland as well as another from Fuller, 19-18. Cleveland and Beary would find the hardwood, 22-20, as Spalding would give the Scots two more points off errors, 24-20. Hopson would set up Beary for the final kill, 25-21. 

Webster answered with a strong fourth set performance. Lyon found itself tied, 9-9, with Snow setting up kills for Cleveland and McCoy. Beary and McCoy would get Lyon a fleeting lead, 11-9, but the Gorlocks would take back over, 12-11. Teams would trade points with McCoy and Beary keeping it tied, 15-15. A 5-0 run by Webster would give them a real off kills, an error, and a block, 22-17. Scots closed the lead to four with Beary and McCoy notching two kills, 24-20, but Webster would take the fourth set 25-20 with a final kill. 

The final set featured a few lead changes and ties. Webster jumped ahead 5–2 on two service aces and a block. Scots would battle to close the lead, with McCoy driving in a kill set up by Snow, 8-6.  A 3-0 Lyon run would tie things, 10-10, as Hopson would set up Beary for a kill and Locke would deliver an ace. Snow would drive in a an to take the lead, but an error would tie it, 12-12. Lyon would grab the lead briefly but, the Gorlocks would seal the match off two kills and a error. 

McCoy led the team with 17 kills, she contributed one assist, and two digs. Fuller lead the team in service aces with five, she also added nine kills, five digs, and one assist. Snow ran the offense with 27 assists, she contributed three aces and 12 digs. Cleveland led the team defensively with 15 digs, she added 11 kills, one block and one ace. McCoy, Cleveland, and Ghan are tied with one block. Ghan added two kills, one assist, and two digs. 

Scots will host Greenville University and Mississippi University for Women in Batesville, AR this Saturday, October 4 at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM.
