EDINBURGH, Indiana - The Lyon College men's golf team roared into third place and are only 11 strokes out of first and three strokes from second after the second day of the SLIAC Championships at Timberlake Golf Course on Monday afternoon.

Freshman sensation, Brooks Vangilder from Marmaduke, Arkansas, birdied an unprecedented nine holes and parred the other nine holes on his way to breaking the SLIAC Individual Championship Record for lowest score in a round with an 9-under 63.
Vangilder shattered the old record held by Justin McCoy of Webster in 2023 and Jarrett James of Illinois College in 2024, who both were formerly number one with a 66. 

As a team, the Scots set a new Lyon College record with a Round 2 score of 278, which is also a season low and ties them for fourth place with SLIAC Championship team-lowest score with Spalding from 2013. The Scots shot the lowest score in the tournament so far, and are sitting with a team total of 577. Second-place Lake Forest is at 574 and leader Mississippi University for Women is at a 566.

Vangilder was masterful on the par 72 course. He started with a par on hole one, then birdied hole two. A par on hole three, led to a four-hole streak of birdies from hole four to hole seven. He parred holes eight, nine, 10, 11 and 12, before getting a birdie on hole 13. He parred holes 14 and 15 and proceeded to finish out the back nine with three birdies in a row (16, 17 and 18) to finish with a 63

And his teammates were nearly as good.

John Blake Turner came through with a 2-under 70 for Round 2. He had a birdie on hole one, parred holes two, three and four, then cupped back-to-back birdies on holes five and six. He parred seven, eight, nine, 10, 11, 12 and 13. After a bogey on 14, Turner easily rebounded to par 15, 16, 17 and 18.

Michael Winne came through by shooting an even par 72 on the second day. Winne parred holes one, four, five, seven, eight, nine and 10 before landing a birdie on 11, parred 12 and birdied 13. He went on to par 14 and 15, birdied 16 and parred 17 and 18.

Ryan Kriz was around even par for most of round two. Kriz birdied hole two, parred four and birdied five. He parred seven, eight, nine, 10, 11 and 12 before getting a birdie on 13. He parred 14, birdied 16 and finished strong with a birdie on 18 for a 1-over 73 for the day.

Manav Perfecto shot a 6-over 78 in round two. He parred holes one, two and four. He birdied hole six and parred holes seven, eight and nine. On the back nine, he parred 12, 16, 17 and 18.

Individually, Vangilder made the largest move of the tournament and moved up 33 spots on the individual list into a tie with Turner for fourth overall of the 63 golfers in the field. Kriz is ranked 12th, Winne is 21st and Perfecto is at 36th.

The Scots will play in round three on Tuesday for a shot at the SLIAC Championship.
