BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Softball Scots swept a SLIAC doubleheader from Principia College on Saturday afternoon at Howard and Mary House Field.
The Scots (13-25, 7-9) outscored Principia a combined 22-0 in both games. Lyon College won the first game 14-0 in five innings and defeated Principia 8-0 in five innings in the second game.
In the first game, the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning for the Scots.
Sophie Varela led off with a single to left-center, then
Anna Voth drew a walk. MK Duffield hit a triple down the right field line to score Varela and Voth.
Olivia Orf singled to center field to bring in Duffield. Then with one out, Orf advanced to second on a throwing error by the Principia catcher.
Brianna Morquecho reached first on an error and Orf went to third base.
Rebecca Rodriguez singled to left-center field to score Orf. With two outs,
Emily Martinez walked and took off for second base and Morquecho scored for a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, Duffield was hit by a pitch and scored when Orf tripled down the right field line.
Skylar Foreman walked and stole second base, then went to third when Morquecho singled. With two outs, Martinez singled to left-center field and Foreman scored. Martinez advanced to second on a wild pitch and Morquecho scored on the play. Varela singled down the right field line and Martinez went to third base. Voth hit an infield single and Martinez scored. Duffield singled and advanced to second on an error, which allowed Varela and Voth to score for a 12-0 Lyon College lead.
In the bottom of the third inning,
Gabby Thomas tripled to right-center field and with one out, Rodriguez homered to make it 14-0.
Georgia Holzer was the winning pitcher for the Scots. She pitched five innings and did not allow a hit or a run. She walked one and had three strike outs in the shutout.
In the bottom of the second inning of the second game, Orf led off with a double to center field. Morquecho walked. Orf and Morquecho moved up a base on a wild pitch, then Rodriguez doubled to left-center to score both of them for a 2-0 lead.
Fallon Lancaster singled to score Rodriguez to make it 3-0.
In the bottom of the third, Voth led off with a single to center field, Duffield was hit by a pitch and both stole up a base. With one out. Voth scored on a wild pitch and Duffield moved to third base. Foreman singled to right field to score Duffield and Rodriguez singled to right-center to bring in Thomas, who was pinch running for Foreman, to make the score 5-0 Scots.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Varela walked with one out, then stole second and third. Voth singled down the right field line to bring in Varela. With two outs, Orf doubled to right-center to score Voth for a 7-0 Lyon College lead.
In the bottom of the fifth,
Ohnrie Bergman doubled to right field with one out and
Madison DeRoussel came in to run for her. Lancaster hit a walk-off single that scored DeRoussel to end the game with the Scots leading 8-0.
Sydney Lasher was the winning pitcher. She pitched five innings, allowed three hits and no runs. She walked two and struck out four batters.
The Scots will be at home next Saturday for Senior Day at Howard and Mary House Field against Spalding University.
