BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots baseball team swept a SLIAC doubleheader against the Fontbonne Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Fred Wann Field.
The Scots (15-15, 6-6) won the first game 8-7 and defeated the Griffins in seven innings in the second game 12-2.
In Game 1, Fontbonne took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but the Scots tied the score in the bottom half of the second. With two outs, Landon Swallon reached first on an error and
Ashton Compton singled up the middle. Swallow advanced to third on the hit, but a throwing error by the Griffins allowed him to score.
Fontbonne scored three times in the top of the fourth inning to go up 4-1, but the Scots answered with four runs in the bottom half of the fourth.
Braden Bramlett led off with a single to center field,
Braden Hendrix beat out an infield hit and
Caleb Collins reached on an error that allowed Bramlett and Hendrix to score. Swallow doubled to left center field to bring in Collins to tie the game at 4-4. Compton put down a sacrifice bunt to move Swallow to third.
Andrew James reached on a fielder's choice that got Swallow out a the plate. James advanced to second on a wild pitch and
Eli Marcotte doubled to center field to bring in James for a 5-4 lead.Â
Lyon College added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Kooper McCoy led off with a solo homer to make it 6-4.
Fontbonne scored in the top of the sixth to close the Scots lead to one run, but in the bottom of the sixth, Marcotte homered to left-center field to make it 7-5.
The Griffins tied the game in the top of the ninth inning with two runs.Â
In the bottom of the ninth, McCoy singled up the middle,
Logan Lightner walked, Hendrix reached on an error to load the bases, then Collins hit a walk off single to left field to score McCoy and end the game.
Kenny Jennings picked up the win for the Scots by pitching the final out of the top of the ninth inning.Â
Conrad Muier started the game and 3.2 innings and allowed three hits an four runs.
Connor Taylor came in to pitch four innings and allowed two hits and one run, while striking out seven.
Braden Anderson pitched an inning and gave up two runs.
In the second game, Fontbonne took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.Â
The Scots came back with Marcotte taking a lead off walk. Hendrix put down a sacrifice bunt and McCoy doubled to right-center. Bramlett walked to load the bases and that set up Compton's triple to right-center field that scored Marcotte, McCoy and Bramlett for a 3-2 lead.
Slade Inman reached on an error and Compton scored. Inman stole second and Swallow hit a homer run to bring in two more runs to make it 6-2.
Lyon College added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a three-run homer by McCoy.Â
In the bottom of the fifth, Hendrix singled to left field with two outs, then stole second base. McCoy singled to left field and Hendrix scored on the play. Bramlett doubled down the left field line to bring in McCoy and Bramlett advanced to third on a wild pitch. Compton singled to right field to score Bramlett for a 12-2 Scots lead.
A double-play in the top of the seventh ended the game for the Scots.
Patrick Babcock picked up the win for Lyon College. He pitched 3.2 innings, gave up four hits and two runs while striking out four.
Tyler Davis came in to pitch 3.1 innings and struck out three batters, while not allowing a single run or hit.
Lyon College will be in action on Tuesday, April 15 at Fred Wann Field in a double-header with Champion Christian beginning at 2 p.m.
