Williams Baptist defeats Lyon College softball at Howard and Mary House Field

BATESVILLE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots softball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 12-1 loss to the Williams Baptist University Eagles at Howard and Mary House Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Scots (4-18, 0-2) trailed 3-0 after a controversial call on the first hit of the game. With a runner on first base, the second Eagles batter lined out to Brianna Morquecho at shortstop and doubled up the runner at first, but the field umpire over-ruled the play and said that Morquecho had trapped the ball and allowed both runners to stay on base. That set up a Williams Baptist three-run homer.

In the bottom of the first inning, Sophie Varela walked and Anna Voth moved her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Varela stole second and MK Duffield drew a walk. Skylar Foreman singled to left center to bring in Varela to make it 3-1. Both runners moved up on a passed ball, then Olivia Orf drew a walk to load the bases, but a fielder's choice ended the scoring threat for Lyon College.

The Eagles scored two more runs in the top of the second and added four in the top of the fourth to lead 9-1.
Duffield doubled to center field with one out in the bottom of the third for the Scots, but she was left stranded at second after two strike outs ended the inning.

Williams Baptist scored two more runs in the top of the fourth to go up 11-1.
In the bottom half of the fourth, Orf walked to lead off, but a 6-4-3 double-play cleared the bases. Onrie Bergman singled to center field and was left stranded on base after a pop up to the second baseman.

The Eagles put up another run in the top of the fifth to lead 12-1.
Varela reached on an error in the bottom half of the fifth, but two strike outs and a ground out ended the game.

The Scots return to SLIAC play on Friday with a double-header scheduled at Eureka College.
