BUFFALO, New York - The Lyon College Scots men's basketball team saw their season come to an end on Thursday night in the USCAA Division I National Tournament semifinals with a 60-52 loss to Villa Maria at Villa Maria College Athletic Center.
The Scots (18-9) held a slim 26-25 halftime lead and were outscored in the second half by nine points.
Kylon McCullough led Lyon College with 12 points,
Frank Toney finished with 11 points and Warren Kennedy scored 10.
Colbie West had eight points,
Malik Madison scored five points,
John Paul Morgan had four points and 12 rebounds to lead the team on the boards,
Johnzelle Bush had two points, while
Trenton Bell and
Tucker Cunningham were both in the game, but did not score.Â
The Scots shot 37 percent from the field, made only 2-of-20 three-pointers and hit 10-of-14 free throws. They scored 30 points in the paint, had nine points off of turnovers, six second-chance points, four fast-break points and six points from the bench.Â
The game was tied four times, and the largest lead Lyon had was five points, 5-0, at the 18:03 mark of the first half.
Kennedy started the scoring with a three-pointer for the Scots, then West added two free throws, but Villa Maria came back to get within one point before Toney hit a jump shot. Villa Maria tied the game at 7-7 and went ahead by five points until McCullough put in a layup. McCullough scored two more times on layups, and Bush tied the game with a basket at the 9:28 mark of the first half.
Villa Maria led 19-15 when Toney made a layup for Lyon College and Kennedy tied the game at 19-19 with a layup with 6:10 to go in the first half. Villa Maria again took a the lead, but West put in a layup to tie it at 21-21 with 3:43 to go. Villa Maria led 25-21 when Kennedy hit another layup and completed the three-point play with a free throw. Madison finished out the half with a fast-break dunk to put the Scots up 26-25 at halftime.
West scored inside to start the second half, but Villa Maria tied it at 28-28 and went on to lead by two points until McCullough scored for the Scots to tie the game at 30-30. After a Villa Maria basket, Madison put in a free throw, but Villa Maria went ahead 38-31 with 15:23 to go in the game. McCullough put in two layups in a row to cut the lead to three points, but Villa Maria went up by five points with 12:56 to play, 40-35 before Kennedy scored again for the Scots.
Villa Maria led by as much as eight points when Madison put in two free throws to cut the lead to 45-39 with 9:46 left. Toney made a three-pointer, and Morgan made two free throws to make it a one-point game 45-44.Â
Villa Maria went up 49-44, but Morgan scored inside. Villa Maria answered with a six point lead with 4:24 remaining, 52-46. Toney made a layup and hit a jumper to cut the lead to 54-50 with 2:14 left. West added two free throws for Lyon College with 51 seconds to go, but Villa Maria scored the final four points of the game.
