Lyon College softball splits double-header at Ecclesia

SPRINGDALE, Arkansas - The Lyon College Scots softball team opened the 2025 season with a split decision at host Ecclesia College on Saturday afternoon.

The Scots (1-1) won the first game 12-11 and dropped the second game 17-10 as temperatures started to drop in northwest Arkansas. 

In the first game, Lyon College trailed 2-0 until the top of the third inning when they broke out for six runs to take the lead. Ecclesia came back with two runs in the bottom half of the third to close the gap to 6-4.
The Scots added another run in the top of the fourth, but Ecclesia scored three more times to tie the game at 7-7. Lyon College added another run in the top of the fifth inning and Ecclesia answered in the bottom half with a single run to tie the game at 8-8. 
In the top of the sixth, the Scots took a one-run lead and added three more runs in the top of the seventh to go up 12-8, but Ecclesia made it close with three runs in the bottom of the seventh before the final out was recorded. 

Brianna Morquecho was at-bat five times, scored twice and had four hits with three runs batted in and that included a 2-run homer in the top of the seventh inning.
Sophie Varela had five at-bats, scored three times and two hits with one run batted in.
Anna Voth had four at-bats with one run scored, two hits and two runs batted in
MK Duffield had five at-bats, scored once, with three hits and two runs-batted in
Olivia Orf was at bat three times and had one hit
Georgia Holzer, the winning pitcher, had four at-bats, scored twice, off of two hits and had two runs batted-in.
Callie Marberry was at bat four times with one hit and Emily Martinez had three at-bats with two runs scored off of one hit.
Skyler Forman was at bat twice with one hit and one run batted in.
Ashley Abel had one bat and hit a home run.
And Ohnrie Bergam was a pinch runner and scored a run.

Holzer had six strike outs in the win.

In the second game, the Scots started of with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Ecclesia scored three runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Lyon College opened the second inning with six runs to go up 9-3 and Ecclesia answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 9-5 Scots lead.
Ecclesia added another run in the bottom of the third inning, but Lyon answered with one run in the top of the fourth to lead 10-6. 
Ecclesia added another run in the bottom of the fifth to close the lead to 10-7, but exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to clinch the win 17-10.

Morquecho had three at-bats, scored twice and had one hit which was a double. Varela had four at-bats, scored two runs, had one hit and two RBIs. Voth was at bat three times with two runs scored . Duffield was at bat four times with one run scored and two hits and one RBI. Abel was 1-fo-4 at the plate with one run scored and three runs batted in.
Foremna had three at-bats and walked in a run. Orf was at bat one time and scored once and walked once. Marberry was at bat three times and scored a run. Fallon Lancaster was at bat twice and one hit and one RBI. Soni Beene was at bat once, Rebecca Rodriguez was at bat twice and had one hit and one RBI. Reece Montgomery was at bat once and Kennedy Cox was at bat once in the game.

Madison DeRoussel suffered the loss for the Scots and went 5.1 innings. She gave up 14 runs off of 15 hits and walked five batters. Abel came in to pitch .2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits while walking one.
