Scots women's basketball drops 87-74 decision at Eureka College

EUREKA, Illinois - The Lyon College Scots women's basketball team had four players score in double-figures, but suffered 32 turnovers in an 87-74 loss at Eureka College on Thursday night.

The Scots (7-15, 4-11) were outscored 23-22 in the first quarter, but led at halftime 40-38 after outscoring Eureka 18-15 in the second quarter. Eureka came back in the third period to take a 72-59 lead and held on for a 14-point, which was the seventh straight loss for Lyon College.

Natalya Kaza led the Scots with 18 points and had nine rebounds, Savanna Lopez had 14 points and 11 rebounds, Molly Mason added 11 points and Dalye Hambelton had 10 points. Jewel Walley scored nine points, Haven Cooper and Emily Walley scored four points each, Savannah Stout had two points and Alexis Shelton had two points.Olivia Jones played in the game, but did not score.

Lyon College shot 42.4 percent from the field and made six of 15 three-pointers. The Scots went 18-of-21 at the free throw line, they scored 32 points in the paint, had 18 points off of Eureka turnovers, scored 12 second-chance points, added 16 fast-break points and got 17 points from the bench.
The game was tied four times and there were seven lead changes.

The Scots started fast with Mason hitting a three-pointer, then Kaza put in two baskets in a row for a 7-2 lead early in the first quarter. Eureka came back to take a 10-9 lead, but a three-pointer from Jewel Walley tied the game at 12-12. With 2:14 to go in the first quarter, Emily Walley made a jumper to put Lyon College ahead 20-19 and Lopez scored on a fast-break to make it a three point lead, but Eureka came back to tie the game and take the lead at the free throw line with 14 seconds left, 23-22.
Hambelton scored to put the Scots back in front to start the second quarter, Kaza made two free throws and Jewel Walley scored on a layup. Lopez put in a jumper to give Lyon College its largest lead of the game, 30-23 with 7:33 to go before halftime.  Eureka fought back and tied the game at 36-36 with 2:13 to go, but Hambelton added two free throws and Cooper made two from the free throw line for a 40-36 lead at the 1:33 mark.
Eureka tied the game at 40-40 on the first basket of the third quarter. Lyon College didn't score until Mason put in a layup in the paint to make it 48-42. The Scots got back to within four points on a three-pointer from Jewel Walley and a three-pointer from Hambelton, 55-51 with 6:02 left in the period, but Eureka managed to up its lead to as much as 13 points twice in the final minute to lead 72-59.
The Scots fell behind by as much as 20 points early in the fourth quarter, 81-61, but came back to cut the lead down to nine points when Hambelton hit a free throw with 2:11 to go in the game.

The Scots will be on the road again on Saturday afternoon at Blackburn College.
