Greenville, IL – The Lyon College Scots have been crowned the 2025 SLIAC Men's Soccer Champions in their first year of postseason eligibility. In a thrilling championship match against the Greenville University Panthers, the game extended into double overtime as both teams created multiple scoring opportunities throughout regulation. With the victory, Lyon improves to 10-6-3 and officially punches their ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
Lucca Torres and
Joao Barros were both selected to the SLIAC All-Tournament Team, while goalkeeper
Gabriel Rangel's stellar defensive performance earned him the title of SLIAC Tournament Most Valuable Player.
Lyon and Greenville went shot for shot, each recording 16 attempts in the match. The Scots proved more efficient on target, placing eight shots on goal compared to Greenville's four.
Lucca Torres led the attack with four shots, three on target, and netted the game-winning goal in double overtime.
Tiago Donadon added three shots, including one on target, while
Matheus Nunes,
Joao Barros, and
Leonardo Bravo each contributed two shots apiece, with Barros and Bravo both putting two on frame.
Micah Rangel,
Tomas Biasi, and
Salvador Fernandez also tallied shots of their own. In goal,
Gabriel Rangel stood strong, facing four shots on target and turning away each one to secure the shutout.
The first half opened at a measured pace, with both teams battling for control at midfield.
Micah Rangel registered the first shot for the Scots, sending it just high and right of the goal. Late in the half,
Leonardo Bravo made a strong attempt to break the scoreless tie with a low shot toward the center, but the Panthers' goalkeeper made the save. After a tightly contested 45 minutes, the match remained deadlocked at 0-0.
Early in the second half,
Tomas Biasi applied pressure on the Panthers' goalkeeper with a solid shot, but it was stopped at the net. Greenville responded with a few attempts of their own, all sailing wide of the target. The Scots countered with several opportunities but couldn't find the mark. As the second period came to a close,
Lucca Torres managed one final shot, sending the match into overtime still tied at 0-0.
In the first overtime period,
Joao Barros found an opening and sent a powerful shot toward the net, but the Panthers' goalkeeper made the save.
Gabriel Rangel faced back-to-back shots on target and came up clutch with two exceptional saves to keep the Scots in contention. In the second overtime,
Lucca Torres fired a shot on goal that rebounded off the Panthers' keeper. Torres followed it up and buried the game-winner, lifting the Scots to a thrilling 1-0 victory.
Lyon College now awaits to hear Their name called in the field of 64 for the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for Monday, November 10th, at 11:30 AM ET.
