Batesville, AR - The Lyon College Fighting Scots did plenty of battling tonight, taking the Crowley's Ridge Pioneers to a four-set clash. Scots and Pioneers were at each others throats for much of the contest until late-set surges put Lyon out in front. With tonight's win Scots are now 12-14 on the season and remain 5-7 SLIAC Conference play.
Things did not get off to a great start for the Scots in the first set, as the Pioneers offense and mistakes by Lyon kept the team down 10-4. Kills from
Mollie McCoy,
Avery Fuller, and a block from
Keeley Beary showed that there was still life in this team, 11-7. Crowley's Ridge would continue their assault putting up another nine points, but then Scots responded ripping off a 4-0 run. Kills from from Fuller,
Isabel Cervantes, and a Cervantes service ace rang out to cut the lead to only five, 20-15. Lyon would turn the tables on the Pioneers as an offensive wave rolled over them with McCoy driving in three huge kills all set up by Cervantes to tie it, 21-21. A service ace from Fuller and another kill from McCoy rattled the opponent, causing two errors that sealed Crowley's fate 25-22.
The second set was similar to the first with the Pioneers scoring first and then Lyon responding with a kill from Beary set up by
Madeline Hopson and a
Claire Carothers service ace, 2-2. Crowley's Ridge would jump ahead of the Scots to make it a seven point game,10-3, mostly off kills and errors. Kills from
Cristen Cleveland, McCoy, and Carothers all set up by Cervantes would take that lead to only five, 13-8. This was only brief as Pioneers would find some offensive juice and separate with a nine point lead, 19-10. Scots would wake up late scoring on a 5-1 run, off kills from Beary, Cleveland, and Fuller all assisted by Hopson. A
Sofia Santis service ace would add to that to make it 20-15. Lyon would score another six points late as McCoy drove in three kills, Fuller notched a kill, and Cleveland drove in an ace. Despite that Pioneers scored with two pairs of kills and final error from Lyon to take the second set, 25-21.
Scots took the lead early,5-4, off kills from Cleveland, Cervantes, and Fuller all set up by Hopson. This lead changed hands multiple times and many ties came during this early portion of the set. A kill from
Reyleigh Twist was followed by an error to tie at 10-10, an error by the Scots tied it at 12-12, and finally Cleveland found the hardwood to make it 14-14. Scots would shoot ahead,22-16, as McCoy drove in three kills, McCoy and Fuller laid down a block, and Cervantes racked up another service ace. Pioneers would close the lead to only two points, but Twist would take the set driving in two late kills.
The fourth and final set began with Crowley's Ridge starting off hot going up by 10 points early in the set. Scots would keep it close, falling behind only four points with kills from Cleveland, Beary, Fuller, and McCoy to make it 10-6. Twist would take it upon herself to tie the game with a kill assisted by Santis and two big service aces, 12-12. Pioneers would take the lead briefly before being hit with a kill from Cervantes and an error of their own,14-13. A kill from Cervantes would be followed by another kill from the Pioneers in what was the third tie to occur in such a short time. However the Scots would overcome them as Fuller let fly two service aces, Beary laid down her second block, and McCoy drove in another kill. With the score now 23-18, Beary with the assist from Cervantes nailed down another kill and teamed up to lay down the final block to the set 25-21.
McCoy drove in 15 kills leading the team offensively and led the way with 15.5 points. She also added five digs and one block. Fuller racked up three service aces on the night to lead the team, she also contributed 11 kills, four digs, and two assists. Beary was your lead blocker with a total of three, she also drove in 11 kills. The offense went through Cervantes tonight as she notched 27 assists. She also added four kills, two aces, one block, and four digs. Defensively Cleveland led the way recording 22 digs, she also contributed 11 kills and two aces to your offense.
